Literacy and Numeracy

NAPLAN

Dear Parents,

Next week the students in Years 3 and 5 will undertake the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing. The tests will be held on Tuesday 14th May, Wednesday 15th May and Thursday 16th May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy.

All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Support can be given to students with disabilities and exemptions can be granted to students with severe intellectual disabilities or for students who have been learning English for less than a year.  If your child is eligible for support or exemption you are encouraged to discuss this with your child’s teacher.

Students may be withdrawn by their parent or carer but this must be done in consultation with the school principal. If after consultation, you still choose to withdraw your child you must complete and sign a student withdrawal form. These are available at school.

Students who are absent on the day of the tests are able to sit catch up tests during the test week up to Friday 17th May.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will show how your child has performed in relation to National minimum standards across Australia. The information you receive will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in Literacy and Numeracy.

For more information about the tests please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au.

If you have any other concerns or questions please do not hesitate to come and have a chat with me about the testing.

Warm regards

Annabelle
