First Flavours in the Kitchen

Kitchen Session                  Thursday 2nd March

In the Kitchen, we made an Aboriginal Firsts Food with Indigenous Flavors. We harvested Pig Face, Salt Bush, Warrigal Greens, Native Basil, Native Oregano, Geraldton Wax from the Indigenous garden at the front of the school, community garden and the native habitat garden by the bees.

The kitchen supplied us with Strawberry Gum  from Mabu Mabu and Miss Hui bought the Finger Lime, also known as Citrus Caviar, that we ate after snack. When you squeeze the Finger Lime, little bubbles that look like caviar come out and it is very satisfying. The bubbles pop in your mouth and it has a very strong sour taste. Not many people grow Finger Lime/Citrus Caviar so it is very expensive but now more people are growing it because first foods due to the rising interest and demand in these foods.

Kitchen 1 made a pie with warrigal greens, Kitchen 2 made the pasta sauce with tomatoes from the garden and Native bail and native oregano, Kitchen 3 made the warrigal greens pasta dough, Kitchen 4 made apple and strawberry gum muffins with geraldton wax icing (the apples were from the garden) and Kitchen 5 made the leafy greens that included the Pig Face.

We also had guests come in to help and share the meal: Sam (Kira Z’s Mum), Judy (Jensen’s Mum), Julie (Poppy’s Mum) and Kira, an Aboriginal Guest that came in to help in the kitchen, who is the school's Koorie Engagement Support Officer (KESO).

Nate B's Mum also came in and gave us a Bird Bath that she had painted after the kitchen session. It's stunning and will go in the front Indigenous garden. Kitchen was very fun and we hope we keep using these ingredients so all classes can enjoy them too!
