Sustainability News

On Friday 10th of March Ms Marie and I had our first Eco Warrior meeting with representatives from Year 1 to Year 6. The meeting was a great opportunity for the students to share why they wanted to be part of the team and for us to begin to discuss ways we can improve Sustainability in the school in 2023.
The students took part in a Sustainability Scavenger Hunt to identify practices we already have in place at school and to begin to identify areas of improvement.
One area of improvement will be addressing reducing our rubbish and food waste at SoGS this year. More information from our Eco Warriors to come.
Introducing the Golden Gnome
Each year level has an area of the school yard to keep tidy. The Eco Warriors will help Mrs Sanderson identify the cleanest areas on the yard and award the year level the Golden Gnome at Friday’s whole school mindful practice.
Earth Hour 2023
Families are encouraged to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday 25th of March.
This year, Earth Hour is an opportunity to take #TimeOutForNature and call for stronger action to protect our planet’s future.
If you would like to sign up to #SwitchOff go to https://www.earthhour.org.au/ or simply take some time out in nature as a family on that weekend.
Ideas could include: gardening, going for a walk, listening to music, doing a nature based meditation, prayer or mindfulness. A great resource is https://www.lookup.org.au/ which encourages people to look up and admire the world around them.
Students will engage in a whole school reflection during mindfulness on Friday 24th of March to promote the day.
Sustainability Pledges from our Staff
Our staff reflected on our current sustainability practices by also doing the Scavenger Hunt around the school. We identified areas that are working well and discussed what we can do better to promote sustainability at SoGS. Each staff member made a pledge to help the environment.
