Learner Assets

In the Senior classroom we have begun to explore the essential learner assets that all successful learners need in their toolkit. As learners we are thinkers, self-managers, collaborators, communicators, researchers, and contributors. These assets help us in our journey as life-long learners, and we have been connecting with their importance to us as Seniors.

Last week we zoomed in on the asset of self-managing. As self-managers we can learn independently, locate the tools and resources we need to be successful, and seek guidance and support when we need it. We reflect on our learning and set our own personal goals that challenge us and that we are motivated to work towards. These goals can be small and short-term: choosing a good fit spot in the classroom where I am able to focus. Or they can be big and long-term: crafting and publishing the text I have been working on since the beginning of term.

Thinking about and exploring these learner assets has helped us to connect with ourselves as learners, and has helped to make the many and varied processes of learning visible.

We can take example from Jesus in our journey as life-long learners. When Jesus was learning in the temple as a child (Luke 2:41-52), he was curious and open-minded to the wisdom and knowledges of the teachers. He learned from and with the teachers, asking them many questions during his time there which challenged and inspired them. Jesus showed many of the essential learner assets while he was in the temple, and throughout his life on Earth. We continue to draw on Him for inspiration and guidance on our journeys as life-long learners.
