Middle Years

As the term draws to a close, I would like to thank students and parents for their hard work and commitment to remote learning over the past seven weeks. This term has been quite different and challenging in many ways, and the holiday has come at a good time. I hope you can have a good break and enjoy the spring weather.

Here are four Positive Education themes I would like to focus on in this final newsletter article for the term;

GRATITUDE

Be grateful for the good things in your life. Gratitude builds hope. Reflect on the good things and express gratitude to friends. Be grateful for your own efforts. Gratitude is something I look for every day and is a simple way of shifting to positive thinking.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS:

Build strong relationships, build adolescents’ emotional and social intelligence.

Be kind.

Forgive friends when they make a mistake.

Treat each other with respect.

Do not complain behind each other’s back.

Resilient people relate to others.

POSITIVE AND “REALISTIC” OPTIMISTIC MINDSET:

Adopt a positive and optimistic mindset. Focus more on positive emotions rather than the negative emotions. Optimism is another key ingredient of resilience.

RESILIENCE:

As Brene Brown says ‘dust yourself off and get back into the arena’. Resilience is not all or nothing. It comes in amounts. You can be a little resilient, a lot resilient, resilient in some situations but not others. No matter how resilient you are today, you can become more resilient tomorrow.

Resilient people – adults and children – are comfortable with their feelings and they express them. Resilient people do not get “stuck” in an emotion. Although they might feel sad or scared, these feelings do not prevent them from coping with the situation and moving forward.

Resilience requires flexible thinking and agility.

I am looking forward to school returning face to face in Term 4, and it will be wonderful having students back in MyPEC. As a school community, we are at our best when we are working collaboratively and learning in class. I am looking forward to a smooth and productive finish to the year.
