Icarus Community. We Care. ❤
Icarus Community. We Care. ❤

On behalf of the AHPS students, I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the staff for their wonderful support and encouragement during these difficult times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The effort and organisation involved in moving to remote learning has been huge and has provided many obstacles for us all at times.

Our teachers, though, have risen to the challenge and provided us with a curriculum that has been stimulating, educational and fun all at the same time.

Thank you teachers for making homeschooling a time that has taught us valuable lessons and prepared us as well for future years.

All of our communities wish to give a special belated shout out to our school leaders, Pete and Rachel, for all their hard work and endeavours to keep a smile on our faces.

The office staff too have been diligently working, keeping our school ticking along. Your efforts are very much appreciated and we wish to acknowledge this.

2020 has been a different and difficult year for us all and I do hope that term 4 will see our school community together again on campus. To see our friends and teachers again would be terrific after so long, and we could plan to finish the end of the school year all together with a big bang!

Icarus’ Fitness and Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle🦋

Our Daily Fitness Posts
Our Daily Fitness Posts

During remote learning, our P.E teacher (Alannah), and community have been making sure students have been keeping up their fitness and Elisha has set up a wellbeing classroom for students mental health. Both physical and psychological health has been a focus during the Covid-19 pandemic and our teachers have ensured this was addressed in output landing. The community teachers have been amazing and so creative, posting new exercise tasks everyday for the students and their parents to remain active. There was yoga, meditation, workouts sessions and dance parties. They have done an outstanding job and on behalf of the students we say thank you.

Elisha's Wellbeing Space
Elisha's Wellbeing Space

Elisha this term has set up a wellbeing classroom. It has been great support for kids doing it tough and having trouble coping with the pandemic, or normal everyday life. She has also set up some activities to help students with mental wellbeing and to be more focused. These are:

Virtual wellbeing office,

Zones of regulation,

Tips for remote leaning,

Wellbeing with Melbourne football club,

Screen free activities,

Wellbeing create room,

Wellbeing kindness room and

The Cares.

Elisha has done a wonderful job at keeping on top of the children’s mental wellbeing and to help them cope through this difficult time.

Well done, Elisha!

Icarus’ Community Meetings🦋

The Icarus community meetings have been going great, especially the second time we went online learning. In term 2, when we first started online learning, our numbers present at the meeting weren’t big but when we went back online we had an average of 25 students everyday. To make this experience even funnier, our teachers have been doing questions every meeting, like: What is your favourite combination of weird food? Every Friday there is some kind of day, like rainbow day, where we had to dress in rainbow cloured clothes.

The teachers also added a Friday 'Try Not to Laugh' challenge, which on the first day was a fail - nobody laughed, and on the second challenge, one managed to crack up a few people. Overall, it was a real fun experience.

Icarus' Journey as Online Learners🦋⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When remote learning was announced, the Icarus community didn’t expect it to become natural to our school routine. Given that homeschooling has gone on longer than planned, we have all seized the opportunity to learn as much as possible and to stay positive in these unpredictable times.

Although adjusting to online learning may have been more difficult to other communities, Icarus is very grateful for how positive and fun this experience has been. Everyday we are all hoping that we will see everybody at school, one day soon.

Ainsley's Reading Lessons
Ainsley's Reading Lessons

For Reading this term we have been learning about reviewing, summarising, predicting, inferring, and adding new words into our reading journals. Our reading journal is a book for us to write down what books we have read over the week, and it is also used to put down new words that we don’t know. This week we had a geologist that made us videos showing us the things she found, like rocks and minerals. Did you know that there is a mineral called Micah, that makes eye shadow?

We have also been so lucky to have Epic books to help people who don’t have books at home. I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe at home. Have a lovely day.

In term 3, the Icarus Community have been learning about narrative writing. In week one we started to plan our stories: characters, setting, etc. In week two we continued to plan our stories. In week three we wrote our orientations. After writing, we would do an online meet with our teacher to make some edits and get feedback. In week four, we wrote our complications, then made edits and got feedback from the teacher. In week five we got a whole week to write our climax, same for week six we got a whole week to write our resolutions. This week we are making changes to our whole story and publishing.

Inquiry
Inquiry

The Icarus community in the past 9 weeks have been learning about sustainability in Inquiry. Each week we learn an element of sustainability and how we impact the system and how to have balance. We also used the KWL (Know, Wants to know, Learned) chart to track our learning and build confidence to achieve our dreams and believe we are improving. One of the elements was the carbon footprint 👣 and how we and our families can reduce our carbon footprint which is by using bikes rather than cars, switching off lights when not needed and using light bulbs that save energy which also helps with bills, and making sure to use products that can be reused. This is what the Icarus community has achieved.

Anika's SEL Task
Anika's SEL Task

This term we have learned about bullying. We have learned about how we know if someone is bullying you or not.

We have also learned about bystanders to bullying. It is like to speak out if you see bullying happening. We have also learned Peer Pressure, which happens when people are in the same age or group and they peer pressure people into do something that they don’t want to do.

Empathy is about people’s feelings or emotions and how to tell how they feel.

Keshmita's SEL Task

We have learned what our caring Matrix is about. It’s about our school values: caring for yourself and others, our school and your amazing learning and you.

Icarus’ Kitchen Garden🦋

Homemade pizza ❤
Homemade pizza ❤

The Icarus community has been making remote learning fun and interesting. We have created an assignment called ‘Kitchen Garden’. You might be thinking: what is ‘Kitchen Garden’? Well it’s your lucky day, I am going to tell you.

Growing our gardens ❤
Growing our gardens ❤

Kitchen Garden is where you can upload videos of you cooking or making a meal. You could also take a photo of your meal or a photo of you making the meal.  You can upload lots of videos and photos of your gardens that have some vegetables and fruit. If you don’t have a garden that has fruit and vegetables and all of those healthy foods, you could just show a video of your backyard and what you have. For example, you probably have a slide or a swingset. You could also show your front garden if it has different kinds of plants. The plants don’t need to be plants that are edible, they can be anything, like for  some decoration for your house. We all hope you could try it out, too.

Thank you!

Dear Hadis - Advice Column
Dear Hadis - Advice Column

Dear Hadis,

I am feeling really tired and can't finish my work on time. What can I do?

From Mr. Tired.

Hey Mr. Tired,

I get it, you have to get up and do your work.

Have you ever tried to have a sleeping schedule, like 8:30pm? It is the best time to get sleep. I hope it helps :)

Dear Hadis,

The school holidays are coming up and I know I'm going to be bored. Do you have any tips for me to make my holidays less boring? - Bored McBoring

Hey McBoring,

I get it, having  a boring holiday is not fun - so here’s some things you can do to have a less boring holiday. I have a few tips for you. Have you ever tried to have a little picnic in your backyard? If you can’t do that, just spend time with the ones you love. Oh - and don’t spend a lot of time with devices. I hope that helps.

Dear Hadis,

When it's hot outside and I have no water what should I do? Sometimes the shade does not work to cool me down.

From Hot-in-the-Shade

Hey Hot-in-the-shade,

I get it, being hot at home is not cool so here are some tips. Have you ever tried to wear shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt, and put on the cooling? If you are at school, maybe bring cold water, and also at home have cold water, or a hat at school and home. I hope that helps :)

What up, Hadis?

I'm so bored, what TV show should I watch?

From Mr. TV

Hey Mr. TV,

I get it, finding a TV show is hard but I have a few ones to show you. Netflix is full with so many shows, but if you don’t have Netflix - YouTube has many videos and TV shows like Talking Tom and friends or Beetle boy. I hope that helps :)

Dear Hadis,

I have been so caught up on my writing that I just don’t have time for my reading or for my maths and even my SEL and Inquiry.

What do I do?

From Mysterious

Hey Mysterious,

Here’s a tip: maybe have a hour on each thing every single day. I hope that helps.

Hadis, Year 5.
