Year 8 & 9 Subject Selections | Information

As our Year 9 students move to Year 10, they are reminded of the importance of their pathway development. Supported by their Coordinator Ms. Wilson, Careers Coordinator Ms Jakubicki and Senior Sub-school Leader Mrs Riddoch, students selected the subjects that they will study in their first senior year. This is an exciting stage in paving the way towards their future goals.

Year 8s also chose their final subjects for their Middle School year. Year 9s are offered many electives and the Middle School Information Night was conducted online. This was a great success and students followed the process very closely. They are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm and attendance on the night. Many staff attended the event to support this initiative and Mr Pousoulis has ensured a smooth transition into this subject selection process.

Careers Update | VCE Information

Careers in Term 3 has been extremely busy with virtual VCE information nights, the Year 12 VTAC information session, subject selection interviews and processing Vocational Education and Training (VET) applications.  Whilst all of these activities support students’ endeavours, the current focus is on supporting year 12 students with their career plans beyond 2020.  The VTAC season is upon us!

The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) is the administrative body which processes most applications for universities, TAFE providers and private colleges.  Ms Riddoch and I ran a VTAC Information session for all year 12 students on 12th August 2020,  where we spoke about the application process, what special consideration students could apply for and how scaling worked.

This year saw the introduction of a new section under The Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) Category 4 – Difficult Circumstances and this is, “difficult circumstances relating to remote learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic”.  SEAS acknowledges difficulties students have experienced and that have impacted their education and SEAS can increase a student’s chance of receiving an offer for the course of their choice.

Under this new “COVID-19” section, students can indicate the level of educational impact they experienced in certain areas.  They don’t need to write anything about these impacts, and the only supporting evidence required will be supplied directly to VTAC by the school.  Students need to be honest when rating the level of educational impact they have experience through remote learning as the school will be asked to verify their circumstances.  I have encouraged all students to consider applying for this category if it applies to them.  Students who are undertaking subjects such as Art, Product Design, Visual Communication, Music, Drama, Theatre and who have had limited access to resources they need for their subject are strongly encouraged to apply for SEAS.

When VCE results & ATARS are released on the 30th December, 2020 there will be an opportunity for year 12s to access course counselling if they wish.  Dates and times of when this will occur will be announced next term. There are several key VTAC calendar dates that students have been made aware of and a list of these are below.

VTAC fees (2020):

Timely application: $41 (30th Sep 2020) / Late application: $119 (6th Nov 2020) / Very late application: $155 (4th Dec 2020)

(NB: further round offer dates for domestic & international students available via VTAC website)

Wellbeing @ Wheelers | SchoolTV Resources

Remote Learning can present many challenges, including dealing with feelings of isolation, disconnection, and loneliness while separated from friends and teachers. Luckily, all  WHSC students, parents, and staff can access the WHSC Wellbeing Portal, which provides information on a range of issues including mindfulness, anxiety, and maintaining good mental health while Remote Learning. Access the Portal via Compass, the College website, or by clicking here.

Students and families looking for information on how to deal with the emotional impact of COVID-19 can also consult the info in the above attachment from HeadSpace.
