Reading at McCarthy

It is wonderful to see junior classes enjoying their reading choices in our dedicated library reading space. Having students make a selection and choose the ‘just right” book for them is an important part of our reading program at McCarthy. We have been supporting classes and assisting students with their book selection skills.  We have added numbers on the book spines to assist students to choose a book within their reading range. We have shown our visiting reading classes how to search by browsing and we have been visiting English classes. In class we have been upskilling students in how to use the catalogue effectively to make selections. To remind students, we have added a link to the library home page for students to review how to use the catalogue to select a book. If students have a query or need assistance in finding a book, we encourage them to ask the library staff.

What is new? E-Magazines on SORA

We are pleased to launch our electronic library e-magazine collection for all age groups. We have just acquired access to nearly 400 popular magazines with current and back issues available.

Magazine titles are now available under three categories:

  • The Magazines for Kids collection is available to all primary and secondary students, and staff. The collection features 90 titles.
  • The Magazines for Teens collection is available to all secondary students and staff, and features 190 titles.
  • The Magazines for Adults collection is available to the students in Years 9-12 and staff, and features 90 titles.

All magazine titles have unlimited access licences so they can be used for groups or as class sets.

Library Displays:

From little things, big things grow

In the library, we have a display of some beautiful and thoughtful work by Year 9 students on the wall. The display highlights the Beatitudes the students have been studying through a unit titled “Living the Commandments,” with their teacher, Mr Paul McNeil.

Remembrance Day 2021

This week we acknowledge Remembrance Day in our Library. Remembrance Day is on Thursday, 11 November 2021. On this day, we pay respect and pause for one minute to remember the service and sacrifice of our veterans and current serving personnel. The display contains some of the many fiction books and also non-fiction books in our history section which highlight Australian involvement in conflicts and on battle fields across the world.
