It has been great to have a full week onsite for our students.  After such a disrupted year it is fantastic for students and staff to be back working together.  We hope that we can continue for the rest of the term and finish the year strong, with the students being able to have some great experiences.

Year 12 Students

All of our staff have the highest respect for our year 12 students who have endured so many challenges this year.  After a massive year, they will have the opportunity to celebrate on Monday with their peers and staff in the school.  On Wednesday 4th November our year 12 students will Graduate.  This will be marked with ceremonies at the McGuire and Wanganui Campuses (more details can be found in this newsletter).  We congratulate our Class of 2020 – this is a year you will never forget.  Well done for your resilience and perseverance on managing during this testing year.  We wish you the best of luck with your exams and may your futures be bright and filled with success.

6/7 Transition

While we say goodbye to our year 12’s we have also been working hard on preparing for the transition of all our Year 6 students into Year 7.  This has been a huge piece of work  and our transition team has worked tirelessly with our feeder primary schools to ensure that we have meaningful and informative information so we know how best to support our enrolling students.  We are grateful to our local primary schools that have worked with us to ensure that we can support students to transition into secondary schooling smoothly.  It is hoped that our transition program will be able to commence, which will allow students to visit our school and get to know staff during this term.  This will lead up to the state-wide transition day that is set for 8th December.

Planning for 2021

While we also have welcomed back students to onsite learning and are busy with day to day activities, many of our staff have been working hard on planning for 2021.  This includes teaching staff in their domains (learning areas) working on the development of new curriculum, but also our leadership team working on the strategic plan for 2021.  There is a lot to do and organize, but our team has been working hard to ensure 2021 is set up for success.

Build update

The Hawdon Street site continues to develop at a rapid pace.  Each week now there are very noticeable additions and the size and scope of this project is evident.  During this term we have staff and students having tours of the building site.  This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to see what is going into such a huge project and also make connections to their learning and potentially future pathways to careers.  On Monday a small group of students took part in a tour which (hopefully) signals the start of many more students to tour the site, along with work experience and other on-site learning opportunities heading into next year.

See the full report and some great images on the 'Site Tour' page.

Staff

Finally, our executive leadership team would like to acknowledge our wonderful staff.  This year has been unlike any other, and staff have been forced to adapt and be flexible with COVID-19.  While we thank each and every staff member for their dedication and commitment to supporting students at GSSC, we mark World Teachers Day on Friday 30th October and celebrate the great teachers in our school.   Thank you!
