Unit 3 –
‘Poop’ Lab:
As part of Unit 3 Food Studies, students are required to explain the physiology of eating and digesting, and the absorption and utilisation of macronutrients.
To support this, students participated in “Making Poo”, a practical investigation that supported their learning of the microbiology of digestion.
Student had to mash food in a cup and send it down a funnel and tube, where it entered a bag. This represented digestion beginning in the mouth, and then moving through the oesophagus and then the stomach.
They had to add food colouring to the bag to represent enzymes, stomach acid and mucus. This new mixture is called Chyme!
Students then had to cut a small hole in the bag and push the chyme through a panty hose over paper towel - the small intestine, where nutrients are taken through the vili and blood vessels send it to the body.
Lastly, they cut a hole in the panty hose, squeezing the remaining contents out on paper towel.
And then they had…
