Ulysses Community Report

November Review

A huge highlight for us this month has been the Colour Run! We loved participating in such a fantastic day and look forward to doing it again next year.

Our Learning

Reading

We have been revising independent reading stamina and building back to 20 minutes of sustained independent reading.

Writing

We have been working on improving our spelling, grammar and punctuation when writing narratives. We have been enjoying using different prompts like pictures or videos to give us ideas for writing.

Maths

This term in Ulysses we have been focusing on number patterns during maths sessions. We have been working on finding the rule to a pattern, using BODMAS to solve equations and completing number sentences by working out missing numbers.

SEL

During SEL this term in Ulysses the community have been working on respectful relationships and resilience. We have been talking about our own strengths and how to apply these strengths to challenging situations. We have also talked about personal coping strategies for when we are under stress.

Inquiry

Ulysses have been working on using our knowledge of Economics to plan and research a fundraiser of our choice. With a budget of $150 we have looked at purchasing items to sell and make a profit. We searched the cost of goods online at various websites and tried to stick within our budget.  Some people have come up with great ideas such as: a bake sale, a Beyblade competition, a sausage sizzle and a donut making stall.

We have talked about the amount of people required to run the fundraiser, where and when it will be held and how long the fundraiser will go for. We have also looked at creating a well-designed poster to advertise the fundraiser. It has been fun working on our skills as business people.

Home Learning

In years 5 and 6 the aim of homework is to build on the concepts of self-discipline, responsibility and initiative to prepare students for secondary school.

Homework tasks will consist of daily independent reading and spelling or unfinished classwork. Next term assignments, essays and research may be sent home.

Students are generally not expected to spend more than 45 minutes per day on homework and no homework tasks will be assigned over the weekends or during the holidays.
