From the Principal

Benvenuto - Welcome

Welcome to week four.

Last week was another first for St Anne’s College, when we celebrated our very first Twilight

Swimming Carnival. There was a fantastic atmosphere, made by the participation of the

children and the support of parents. Cooper House took out the honours on the day.

It was great to see everyone looking their best on photo day. Dale Wright photographers

were very pleased with how the day ran smoothly. Thanks to all the staff who made this

possible.

St Anne’s College follows a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) Framework

which provides a broad range of systemic and individual strategies for achieving social and

learning outcomes whilst addressing behaviours of concern. Last week the Behaviour

Support Team (BST) worked with Dan Petro, a behaviour analyst from Behaviour Resources

Australia, along with some staff from Catholic Education Sandhurst. Throughout the day, the

team engaged in learning about systems, structures and strategies that support the

implementation of our three college expectations: Respect everyone and everything; Be

your best and Help others succeed. The importance of the framework was highlighted for

the team as we recognised the variance in perspective that each individual can bring to a

situation. Implementing such a framework builds opportunity for consistency and clarity for

students and teachers when addressing behaviours of concern. The BST will continue to

work with Dan throughout 2020.

Myself, Koorie Education Worker Leonie Drummond and a small number of students attended the annual apology breakfast at the Queen’s Gardens in Shepparton, where we were lucky enough to listen to the inspirational Lena-Jean Charles-Loffel. Her message was about the stolen generation of

Aboriginal children and that this was not something that had just happened in the past, but

is still happening today. She spoke of the importance of young people knowing and

understanding their Aboriginality and reconnecting with culture. It was a moving speech,

followed by an impactful speech by Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Seema Abdullah

– the theme of her speech was around challenge. She threw out many challenges to the

audience in relation to considering culture, white privilege and tokenism.

We have a couple of student-free days - February 21 and 24 - whilst we continue our work with Marcia

Behrenbruch from Reshaping Schools Australia. Our learning journey with Marcia is around

developing our concept-driven inquiry learning and investigating the important concept of

discernment for our learners as they move through the School of Wonder and Innovation.

Longitudinally we are investigating the impact of inquiry learning on student outcomes.

And finally I return to our college theme for 2020 – Finding joy in every moment. As a

Catholic faith community, we are called to be a living witness to the message of Jesus, a

truly joyful message. So remember to always find the moments of joy in your day.
