Careers Expo - Can you help?
Each year we hold a Careers Expo for our Year 10, 11 and 12 students. The purpose of the Careers Expo is to give students the opportunity to hear from representatives from business, education, industry and/or the community to highlight some examples of what is currently available to our students beyond secondary school. It provides them with the opportunity to consider their future and interact with various avenues of employment, training and/or further education.
This year the Expo will be on Friday 15 May and we would like to invite any members of the community who would be available to present, to contact either lyn.tunbridge@friends.tas.edu.au or lyn.johnston@friends.tas.edu.au or by telephoning 6210 2255. There will be four sessions offered to the students. The sessions will run from 9.30 - 10.30 am and 10.55 – 11.55 am and will consist of two 25 minute presentations (repeated) in each session. Prior to these sessions, students will have the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker in The Farrall Centre, commencing at 8.45 am.
Board of Governors
We are pleased to announce that the Board of Governors has re-appointed Julian Robertson as the Presiding Member of the Board. The Board also re-appointed Craig Stephens and Natalia Urosevic as Deputy Presiding Members of the Board for 2020.
Events / Fair Update
Over recent years, the School has had an annual Twilight Community Fair in March. A significant amount of organisation from a wonderful group of parents has enabled this event to be enjoyed by many community members in recent years. Some of the organising committee would like a deserved break, with some of these parents to hand over the baton as the key Fair organisers. The School has decided that we won't have a Fair this year, rather focus on working with a parent group or representative body that can help facilitate a variety of activities, including a Fair in 2021.
Some parents have shown a keen interest to organise a parent Quiz Night in 2020 It won't be an onerous project, with the focus on community, and less on fundraising. The proposed date for the Quiz Night is Saturday 27 June 2020. Please let Friends' parents and staff members Michele Wilson or Bill Avery know if you'd like to help out in any way for the Quiz Night.
If you have some feedback on 2019 events or suggestions for 2020, please don't hesitate to contact Bill Avery, Director of Community Engagement.
Novel Coronavirus
The School continues to work closely with the Federal and State Public Health Services with information in relation to Novel coronavirus (COVID19). We will continue to follow government advice and to support our international students currently restricted from returning from China, with their study program. As the School has previously mentioned, practising good hand hygiene and sneeze/cough hygiene is the best defence against most viruses:
- wash hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
- cover coughs and sneezes, dispose of tissues and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser
- and if unwell, avoid physical contact with others.
Up-to-date information is available at the Australian Governments Resource page.
Roadworks
The School has been advised that TasNetworks should complete the sub-station work on Argyle Street by 14 March. There may be some minor cleanup works following the 14 March to seal and finish the footpath/road excavations. Please continue to take care in area and apologies for any inconvenience.
Quaker Meetings for Worship
All members of The Friends’ School community are welcome to attend our Meeting for Worship any Sunday from 10.00am, closing about 11.00, with morning tea available afterwards.
Children are always welcome and there is a Children’s Meeting held concurrently with the Meeting for Worship. They learn about Quaker values through a range of interesting and fun activities. Around 10.50 the children join the Meeting for Worship, settling into the gathered Meeting for the last 10 minutes, usually sitting with their parents.
If you have any enquiries please ring Sally McGushin 6278 9149 / 0456 600 287 or Maddy Walker 0402 320 920.
