Co-Curricular Chess

Last week, Blue Mountains Grammar School played their Chess round at home, hosting two schools: Kingswood High School and Wollemi Christian College.

We had quite a surplus of snacks and drinks, which meant that we put on quite the spread for our guests!

It was the last Round for us to host in the West Metropolitan Division of the NSW Junior Chess League Inter-school Competition, and I am sure we made a good impression.

I would like to express my thanks to Mrs Freeman for going above and beyond the call of duty, by supplying more than the Freeman Family’s share of snacks and juice poppers.

Our Acting Headmaster, Mr Steve Coote, came along to watch and was willing to get  involved in a match!

Our opponents from Wollemi were strong teams and won most games, but they left on friendly and magnanimous terms, eager to return.

This Friday, we have our final round for the Chess season, playing Kingswood High School again.

I thank all students, parents and staff who have assisted me – in a myriad of ways – in reviving Chess as a significant and popular co-curricular activity. We have six teams, across three age divisions, which is more than some large Sydney Independent schools!

I am hoping to organise some stand-alone Chess events in the coming weeks and months here at school.
