Level 3/4

It’s been a busy start to Term 3 in Level 3 and 4!

Our Open Afternoon was a huge success, and it was wonderful to share our classrooms and our learning with the school community and our families. A big thank you to everyone who came along and joined in some of our Maths games!

We have welcomed back Mrs. Hastie this term and it is wonderful to have her back with us! A big thank you to Mr. Hill, who has done an excellent job in 4H and who we have loved having as part of the Year 4 team over the past few months.

We are counting down to our Year 4 camp at Camp Weekaway which is fast approaching on August 10th. We encourage parents and students to practise packing camp items into their luggage, making sure everything is labelled and ready to go for Week 5. Year 3 camp is also fast approaching, and we encourage families to ensure that all forms are returned as quickly as possible.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge is still taking place, and a big congratulations to those students who have already completed it! We have a number of students who are very close to finishing as well. Don’t forget to keep adding your books on the website.

There has been lots of learning happening in the classrooms as well. In Reading Workshops, Level 3 and 4 students have been learning to identify the main idea of a text, recognise supporting evidence, and determine importance. The Level 4 grammar focus has included pronouns, homophones and homonyms, while the Level 3 students have practised spelling ‘long i’ and ‘short o’ words.

This term’s focus in Writing has been information reports. Over the past few weeks students have learnt how to research information for a topic and how to organise our information effectively. Level 3 students have been using Lotus Diagrams in order to collect their information and organise it in a way to help them construct paragraphs. Level 4 students have also been learning how to elaborate on ideas and create full, informative sentences and paragraphs. Level 4 students have researched topics ranging from animals, to classmates, and even the Commonwealth Games. Have a look at some fantastic examples of information reports written by Year 4 students below!

A number of Year 4 students have received their pen licence this term, which is very exciting! Everyone else is working hard on their cursive writing and we look forward to awarding more pen licences throughout the term.

In Mathematics, Level 3 students have been exploring fractions. The students have been learning about different types of fractions, how to represent them using unifix blocks and other visual aids, and how to identify equivalent fractions. Level 4 students have also explored fractions, as well as decimals, data and location. If you want to find out more about our Mathematics program, please visit the Mathematics page.

Level 3 students have been developing their understanding of Emotional Literacy during our Resilience Project sessions. There has been some fantastic growth in this area, particularly in the ability to recognise emotions based on the look on someone’s face and body language. Level 4 students have focused on mindfulness, including a range of strategies to help stay calm and in the present moment.

We have also made a wonderful start to our Inquiry topic, ‘Aboriginal Culture and History Before 1788’. We have been learning a lot about the different Indigenous nations and the way they used the land and its resources for food, shelter, clothing, art and music. We have also explored the history of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. It has been fascinating to see how resourceful and creative the Indigenous people were, and how they made sure to not only use the land but to care for it as well.
