Level 1
Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, dinosaurs!
The Level 1 excursion to Melbourne Museum and IMAX was a fabulous experience for the children! We had so much fun exploring and learning. What a highlight it was to come face to face with ‘Horridus the Triceratops’. Unearthed in the USA after 65 million years, it is one of the most complete triceratops fossils ever found. The beautiful weather allowed us to enjoy our lunch outside before we headed into IMAX to watch the incredible ‘Dinosaurs of Antarctica’ in 3D. We left the museum with new knowledge (and wonderful memories) to take back to our Term 3 Inquiry unit ‘Dinosaurs and More’.
During our Reading Workshops, we have been learning how to infer. By using clues in the text together with our own prior knowledge and experiences, we are able to make inferences about what the text is about or how a character may be feeling. Inferencing is an important Comprehension strategy as it requires children to work out what is not being said by the author and helps to take their understanding of a text to a deeper level. We had fun with many different inferring activities and the children were encouraged to practise this strategy during their independent reading time.
We have had a very interesting few weeks learning all about the features and language of Information Texts. This writing genre links in well with our Inquiry topic about Dinosaurs and highlights the importance of using descriptive language to enhance our writing. We have also been discussing the difference between facts and opinions and why we need to be aware of this when writing informational style reports. Watch this space!
Maths was all about 100 last week as the children played games and participated in many different counting activities. We had so much fun playing Buzz using various skip counting patterns! There were also 100s grid puzzles, displaying 100 pieces of different items and of course, dice activities and races to 100!
It was very exciting for the Level 1 students to reach their 100 Days at School! Look out in the next newsletter for all the news and photos about this exciting milestone!
