Digitech/Lego Club

Digitech

Level 3 and 4 have just finished their image editing unit using Photopea and I have to say, there were some truly amazing images and our students learnt some amazing skills that are transferable to other applications. Ask to have a look at their portfolio reflection on their iPads.

They’ve now commenced the unit on Stop Motion animation which is equal parts exciting and frustrating, as anyone who has ever attempted to make one knows, it takes a LOT of setting up and a LOT of photos to make even a short 15 second video. Our students will learn what it takes to make a good animation and then have an opportunity to make a short video of their own where they can demonstrate these skills.

In Level 5 and 6, our students have just wrapped up their unit using the LEGO EV3 robotics with the last couple of sessions dedicated to line following and using a colour sensor to find the edge of a table. With the latter, even Mr Evans’s program was far from perfect (it didn’t work!) and the challenge was left for the students to develop a program that did work. A special congratulations to Ollie, Max, Zane, Jack and Ethan who developed unique and rather efficient methods to solve the problem!

They have now begun working with the online coding platform, Scratch. After a few sessions on the basics, students are going to create an interactive ‘choose your own adventure’ game which will be a lot of fun!

Our First LEGO League teams have been working hard in the off season and are now eagerly anticipating the release of this year’s challenge mat and mission models. We’ve already made a great start on our project after the hint was given that it has something to do with energy and electricity. As with every year, the innovation project tends to be find a problem within the field that can be solved by either improving existing solutions or coming up with their own amazing idea!

LEGO Club

Lego Club is back in full swing again and students are loving building to a new challenge each week. A special thanks to our Level 5/6 group who came in and finished off a few builds for display during open afternoon!

Don’t forget that the rotation is four-weekly at the moment… however, as numbers adjust, we will be joining the F-1 group with the Level 2 so that we can make it a three-weekly rotation (everyone gets more LEGO club that way!).
