Personal Project Spotlight

MYP personal project- animating a 1930s-style character.

Section A: Learning goal

Ever since last year when the personal project was

announced to us I struggled to find my topic.

I was keen to replicate a gauntlet from a show I watched but I was told by my family and friends to use my already natural talent, drawing. I’ve been drawing since grade 3 and I’ve been getting a decent idea of how to draw with my mind and no visuals in front of me. When I was in Year 9 I gained a particular interest in 1930s-style rubber hose cartoons like Popeye and Mickey Mouse.

The simplistic style and cute rubber-like characters caught my eye. I am happy to say I am ready to create my own animation with existing characters that I have been inspired to bring to life through my animation skills. The two characters are Cuphead and Bendy from two separate video games. Creating a character is a long process so I am going to bring Bendy and Cuphead to my animation. I chose to do animation and not a drawing because I want to capture the wonders that the 1930-style animation had to offer.

My learning goal is to create a simple and smooth animation that will be authentic looking, it will be in the rubber hose style. I will create an intro like the old Mickey Mouse whistling while driving a boat and then lead it to a small animation like a walking sequence or a happy character smiling. I want to make the world smile and laugh one day, and this will be my way to do just that. I will use the Approaches To Learning skills creativity (to be creative in how I will produce my animation), self-management (to make sure I reach my goals and to satisfactory performance) and finally I’ll use research skills (to know how an authentic rubber hose style is animated).
