The Arts

Many exciting things have happened and are coming up these few weeks at Oakleigh Grammar:

  • On Tuesday 23 August 2022 we had our annual Instrumental Soiree at the Conference Centre
  • Oakleigh Grammar students have partnered up with students from our sister school in St John’s and Deborah Amon-Cotter, a local artist, to create a mosaic mural for the August 31 Arts Gala between our two schools. Please see the photos in this section.
  • The Year 10 Drone Digital technology class excursion was a great success, with Year 10 students enjoying the opportunity of getting to know more about how to handle and program them.
  • Artist George Petrou will be working with Year 6 and 7 students over the next months to produce a number of works in response to his painting techniques and artworks. More information on George Petrou’s work can be found here: https://georgepetrou.com.au/

As always, keep creating and innovating!

Kind regards,

News from the Art Rooms

Preps - Our little artists are learning about the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. They created artworks inspired by his famous painting ‘Starry Nights.’

Grade 1 - Students are working on a Unit titled ‘Minibeasts.’ They created ‘Magnified Minibeast’ artworks, in which different types of layouts and the Art Principle of Focal Point were introduced. They also created 3D Butterflies out of cardboard tubes and learnt about the Art Element of Form.

Grade 2 - Students created abstract portraits inspired by the great Spanish art master, Pablo Picasso. They are now starting on a new theme ‘Colourful Cats’ in water colour medium, applying the same Cubist technique.

Year 3 - Students have completed a Unit titled ‘King of Colour-Matisse.’ They completed paper collages made out of organic and geometric shapes using colours inspired by Matisse. This time, they extended their skills by making a collage on the theme, ‘The Great Barrier Reef.’

Year 4 - Students are diligently working on a project inspired by famous Pop artist, Andy Warhol. They are skilfully applying Art Elements and Principles of Colour, Repetition and Pattern in artworks.

Year 5 -  Students are learning about contemporary English artist David Hockney and exploring the iPad app Brushes Redux. They explored a variety of brush options, colours from the colour-well, and line densities to create the desired effect on the theme, ‘Flowers like Hockney.’ Some students also worked on a Cancer Charity Gala Project on canvases with acrylics on the theme ‘Bringing Joy in Darkness.’

Year 9 - Students are developing confidence and skill in drawing facial features, using pencil shading techniques. Some students are extending themselves by exploring other dry and wet mediums.
