EASTERN METROPOLITAN REGION FINALS

BASKETBALL

Senior boys

On Tuesday 2nd August the Senior boys basketball team competed at EMR finals. We had a tough draw for the day but remained optimistic. Our first match was against Lilydale High. It was a scrappy game and we took a while to find our feet, we were lucky to come away with a 4 point win. Game two was up against the prestigious Box Hill Senior, whose defence was second to none. Vermont managed to weather the storm and with some outstanding shooting we came away with the win. Our last match of the Pool Games was against Doncaster Secondary. We played well and found ourselves up by 10 points at half time. They came back at us, and gave us a scare but we managed to pull away again. This win put us through to the final against Norwood Secondary. This game had it all, and we quickly found ourselves up by 30 points. It was looking like it was going to be a clean sweep and we started to relax. Norwood’s intensity lifted and they started scoring. We were put under the pump as they came within 5 points. We managed to find our composure and win the game 52-45.

A massive congratulations to all the boys; Mitch D, Mitch T, Oscar D, Ty G, Aiden L, Isaac M, Kal P and last minute fill in Hayden L. Your on-ball consistent pressure, outstanding shooting and diligent defence was amazing to watch. The team have now progressed through to State which is an outstanding effort, you should be very proud!

Also a special thanks to our helpers Hudson W and Dylan S.

NETBALL

Intermediate boys netball – EMR champions

The Intermediate boys netball played in the EMR round robin at the Waverley Netball Centre last week. The boys had a great day of netball, quickly adapting to the many intricate rules of netball, to play well as a team. With many players who could play in various positions across the court it was a real advantage to have many effective combinations. The boys were successful winners in the pool games against Lilydale HS (16-9) and Box Hill HS (16-14). We narrowly lost out game to Balwyn HS (8-10). We played the semi final against Norwood and had a convincing win (16-9) which sent us in to the Grand Final against Wheelers Hill SC. A very competitive match was played, the boys keep calm and stayed focussed to win 15-14. The team will now play in the State Finals in late August. Congratulations to all players and good luck!

Junior boys netball

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 7 and 8 boys netball team who finished runners up in the Eastern Region Finals. The boys are to be commended on their outstanding play and commitment to improving at every training session. Whilst we were disappointed at falling short in the grand final, the boys should be very proud of their achievements. Thank you to Taylor L and Caitlin S for all of your assistance coaching and scoring. Well done to Alex B, Beau B, Noah C, Tom D, Archie D, Ty H, Christian L, Robbie P, Koby R, Caitlin S, Liam S, Liam W.

Year 8 Girls

A very enthusiastic Year 8 girls netball team set off to play in the EMR round robin at Waverley Netball Centre on August 3rd. Despite injury and illness we had a number of combinations across the court thanks to the talent and flexibility of the players we were able to successfully win the first two games, defeating Upper Yarra SC (18-10) and Blackburn HS (14-10). The 3rd game was tough and we narrowly lost this one to Kew HS (14-18). Despite the loss the girls kept their enthusiasm up and headed into the Semi Final against Rowville. A physical and tough game was played, unfortunately the girls did not come away with the win, losing 26-10. Congratulations to all team members and well done on a great day of netball.

AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL

Intermediate Boys football

What an achievement for our intermediate boys to make it to an Eastern Metropolitan Region Grand Final. Vermont Secondary College came up against a formidable opposition in Rowville. Unfortunately for our team, Rowville were too good throughout the entire match. You boys and the coaches (Mr Smyth and Mr Leithhead) should be so proud of yourselves for reaching the Grand Final, which was a very difficult task to do. Overall, thank you coaches and the captains who led us to the Grand Final. - Ben L Year 9

Goal Kickers: Jai 3, Dylan 2, Benny, Adam B

Intermediate girls football

On Thursday July 21st the Intermediate Girls had the chance to compete at Elgar Park in the Eastern Metropolitan Region Football Finals after winning the Division competition! The first game against Lilydale we had a slow start, but the team was still able to compete on and off the ball. The goal kickers for game 1 were Ella C and Evie P. Everyone contributed great attributes, but the team was just short of a win. Game 2 against Blackburn was a great victory and a great chance to move players into new positions. The girls shared the ball very well and had many great passages of play. The goal kickers for Game 2 were Holly D, Jess D and Evie P. Game 3, the final game for the day, against Balwyn was a loss but all the girls gave it their all. Overall, the day was another great experience for all the Year 9 and Year 10 girls to play together and everyone had an enjoyable day. Thank You to Mr Smyth and Mr Squire for coaching and organising everything. - Evie P

Year 7 boys/mixed soccer

1st game- Vermont SC VS Mount Waverley- 4-1 WIN

1st half we score 2 goals, 1st one by Jay V and Radin H. After a team talk the captain Jaiden D said a few words to get the team more confidence and Armaan S scored. After that, Mount Waverley get set on a counterattack and score a goal. The captain Jaiden D does not let the team put their heads down and gets the team once again, motivated. Soon after, Sam W scores and then the referee blows the whistle for full time.

2nd game- Vermont SC VS Highvale SC- 1-0 LOSS

After putting pressure and defending, not one single goal has been scored by Vermont SC and Highvale SC in the first half. In the second half, Vermont SC defenders make a huge mistake and then we unfortunately cop 1 goal. Vermont SC are eager to score goals, but the Highvale keeper wouldn’t let a goal in.

3rd game- Vermont SC VS Glen Waverley- 2-1 WIN

Finally, very last game and Vermont do not want to go home with 1 out of 3 games won.  Jaiden D and Sam W were the scorers and we were all very happy.

I want to thank our coaches Finn M and Nahuel AL, of course our team Managers Mr. Duiveman and Mr Quinn.

Senior girls

Depleted in numbers but not in spirit, the senior girls basketball team competed in the EMR finals. Game 1 against Lilydale was a close affair for a majority of the game. The team were shooting well and creating some great linking plays. Unfortunately, Lilydale edged ahead in the second half and won 39-31. Game 2 was against the eventual winners of the day Box Hill Senior Secondary College – we envied their 5 player bench! The girls rose to the challenge scoring 7 points to 0 in the early stages of the match, then fatigue got the better of us and Box Hill won 53-27. Our final game for the day was against Doncaster Secondary College, who like us, were searching for a win of the day. Vermont started shaky, not quite hitting our offensive straps as well as we had in previous games but after a half time rev up, the task was set to finish the game with at least 40 points on the scoreboard. It was an intense ending to the game as it wasn’t until 45 seconds to go that last minute recruit Jacinta K scored a jump shot which saw Vermont run out winners 41-26.

The team: Ally L, Morgan P, Chelsea P, Ellie M, Jacinta K, Ava O, Kelsie S.

Absent: Chloe C, Layla L, Sienna V & Milli H

Well done to the girls, and thank you for giving it your all across all three games. To our year 12s Morgan P, Ally L and Chloe C, thank you for your contribution to VSC basketball! We hope to see you return as coaches in the future.
