Learning in M44

Miss

Middle School M44 Windley/Godfrey is sharing the learning taking place in their class…

This term in Year 4 we are learning about the First Fleet.  M44 has been so engaged in this topic and has so far loved learning about what England and Australia were like prior to European settlement and about the impact of the Industrial Revolution.

This week we used laptops to research the crimes and punishments of individuals in 1788, leading up to the First Fleet.  Students chose one criminal and created a ‘Wanted’ poster.  They absolutely loved using coffee to create an olden-day effect!

Here are some of the facts we’ve learned in the last couple of weeks:

Hailey: The punishment ‘transportation’ means being sent away to another country or continent.
Arabella: There were 11 ships on the First Fleet.
Armaan: The punishments were so harsh back then!
Krish: The criminal I investigated only stole a stocking…!
Deeksha: I found it interesting that George Young was punished because he only stole 10 forks and 10 knives.
Mia: Many of the convicts got sick on the ships over to Sydney Cove.
Peppa: Grace was a young girl and she only stole two diapers and got transported to Sydney Cove as her punishment.
Ava: I didn’t know that 5 year olds could get sent to work.
Ekjot: The captain of the First Fleet was Captain Arthur Phillip.
Fiza: The rules were so harsh!
Oliver: The criminal I researched got sent to transportation for only stealing two tablespoons.
Kim: I learnt that whipping was a type of punishment.
Fatima: I didn’t know that Captain Cook died before the First Fleet.
Gurfateh: I feel sad for the children on the ships.
Koriom: There were 700 convicts on the First Fleet and about 20 died on the journey.
Willow: There were rats and pests on the ships that made people sick.
Aisha: They stopped on their journey to pick up
