FIRE (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) Carriers
Last week we had Louise and Michael visit our Year 4/5/6 class from Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd. Louise has been to Sacred Heart School in the past, bringing with her Uncle Wally who was an elder within the Bangerang area. Michael and Louise taught our senior students about the FIRE Carrier program. FIRE stands for Friends, Igniting, Reconciliation through Education. FIRE Carriers are elected within the student group, teachers and staff, to represent the schools journey to reconciliation, and to educate the school community about the local Aboriginal story.
Michael and Louise also led a staff session about the work of FIRE Carriers and how the Sandhurst Diocese has adopted this program.
Both students and staff were engaged and enthusiastic about the work of the FIRE Carrier program and how we can take this role on as individuals.
Michael and Louise will be coming back to SHS in Term Four to conduct a FIRE Carriers commissioning for those students and staff who would like to take on this responsibility.
FIRE Carriers by Tilly and Tamsyn
Here at Sacred Heart School we will be becoming Fire Carriers, which means that we will be learning about reconciling with the Aboriginals of Australia. This means we will learn about how to work together to help create Reconciliation. We will teach others and will work on our future relationships with the Australian First Nation peoples.
