Classroom Learning

Auslan

This year at Sacred Heart School we have been learning Auslan as our additional language. Auslan stands for Australian Sign Language and is the language of the Deaf community of Australia. Auslan is a visual language that uses hand, arm and body movements to convey meaning and helps to remove the communication barriers in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Sacred Heart School has been part of a joint learning and teaching initiative between Catholic Education Ballarat and Catholic Education Sandhurst to participate in the Auslan teacher as co-learner program. This means that our staff at SHS have been learning alongside our students.

The change to Auslan as our language has been incredibly positive amongst both our students and staff. Below are some of the learnings from the 2/3 classroom.
