State Table Tennis

On Wednesday the 10th of August, the Girton Senior Boys Table Tennis team had a very early start leaving on the 6:08am train to Melbourne to attend the School Sports State Final. The team consisting of Aidan Clemens (12M), Tommy Leung (12J), Isaac Willits (12J) and Cian Westwood (12M) had qualified for the tournament by winning the Sandhurst and Loddon Mallee Finals earlier this year.

The first match of the day was against Highvale, each player fought hard and challenged their opponent in the singles and doubles.

The second match was against Wangaratta. This match came down to the final doubles game. The score was all tied up, both teams were even on matches, games but in doubles Wangaratta won one more set than Girton who came up just short.

In the third match Girton played Southern Cross Grammar, featuring two former Girton student and table tennis prodigies in Hannah and Olivia Green. Some games were close, including Aidan’s game against Hannah. Isaac took his game to 5 sets but narrowly lost in the final few points.

Overall, the day was good fun and all the team played exceptionally well, but with the competition standard so high we could not come away with the shield.

Thank you to the team for such a great day and to Mr Smith for coming down at such late notice!
