News from Girton Community Action Group

Indigenous Literacy Foundation Thank You

Last term the Girton Community Action Group (GCAG) ran a book drive for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (https://www.indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au). The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is an Australian not-for-profit founded in 2011 that works to address the educational disadvantages faced by Indigenous Australian children and young people by providing access to books and literacy programs. GCAG collected many picture books, early readers, fiction books and non-fiction books to send to the program. There was an overwhelming response with over 100 books donated! We would like to thank anyone who donated. Your support and kindness are greatly appreciated.

Dignity Drive

Share the Dignity is the organisation behind the Dignity Drive, which aims to supply everyone who menstruates with access to period products when they need them. To find out more about who they are and what they do visit:

Girton participated in the Dignity Drive last March, and we were able to donate more than ten bags worth of period products that could help everyone who does not have access to them. In August, we are hoping to participate in the Dignity Drive again and donate even more products to help others! Please donate any period products you can to boxes found at Morey Reception. Period products can include: sanitary napkins, tampons, period undies and menstrual cups.

Hot Chocolate for the Month of August!

This month GCAG will be making hot chocolates!

Starting week 4, hot chocolates will be sold with marshmallows in front of Morey kitchen for $2 each. All money collected will be going towards Bendigo food bank. Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organisation, that provides food for vulnerable Australians. Please support this important organisation and enjoy a warm hot chocolate in the cold weather!

Dresses for Drought

Finding a dress or a suit can be extremely difficult, but what if you had the added concern of money or access? As the formal season is rapidly approaching, the Community Service team is organising a Buy, Donate, Sell for the Dresses for Drought initiative. This project aims to distribute formal wear to people in need.

If you have a suit or a formal dress collecting dust  in your cupboard, please consider donating them to this worthwhile cause.

The items of clothing can be dropped off at Mrs Watanabe’s office in the Naunton Building by Monday the 15th of August.  You can either donate it or sell it.  The price of your item will be decided by you and 50% of this sale will be donated to the charity. Please remember to fill in the form if you are intending to sell the dress. This form is available from Morey Reception. If you would like to purchase a suit or a dress,  please come to the Lecture Theatre from the 16th till the 20th of August during lunch time.
