Youth UN Evatt Competition

Every year Evatt, Australia’s most popular model UN competition, provides students with an opportunity to engage with global politics and solutions to the issues facing our world. With other passionate students representing their delegated countries, students work to improve resolutions on issues such as regulations on armed conflict, extradition, and questions of state sovereignty. Working together, students work from the perspective of their country to pass amendments with the support of other countries, in the hopes of improving global responses to international issues. The long day typically involves three rounds where delegates negotiate, persuade and amend the resolutions.

This year, four Girton students recently competed in the first round of Evatt, hosted in Nathalia. Leaving school at 6:45, Sophie Mayes, Ava Griffin, Remus Brasier and Zoe Cuthbertson, accompanied by Mrs Barton, represented Russia and the United Arab Emirates. Throughout the day the teams competed with 6 other duos in 3 rounds of debate, with a final secret topic regarding legislation surrounding the use of weapons of mass destruction.

The day allowed us to extend our knowledge of international relations, develop our public speaking skills and work with others to reach a common resolution. We would like to thank Mrs Barton for all of her support, giving us the opportunity to participate in this event and our 4 hours of carpool karaoke.
