Understanding words and context

We have continued to unpack words contained within the Big Idea  - 'society'.

Students were asked to identify as many observations as they could about the word

and define it in their own words. We spoke about its meaning in the context of the Big Idea statement and we discussed similar words; social, socialising, socialist.

 

We continued with applying the skill of summarising to identify key words and record the main ideas and supporting details in a text.

 

We continued to explore the meaning of words through a 'Word Investigation' to develop a knowledge of unfamiliar vocabulary as well as, explore words in context and how the words that surround other words impact their meaning.

 

For example, length can mean two different things:

I examined the unusual artefact at length...

I measured the length of rope and noticed it was far too short ...

Home Reading

We encourage you to share texts that you have at home with your child.

It is important that you have conversations with your child about the text. This could include discussing unfamiliar vocabulary, summarising the main points or ideas in a chapter, making predictions about the text or, reflecting on characters' actions and emotions.

 

From Monday, your child will commence bringing books home accompanied with a journal and, we will communicate how you can support them with reading.
