LMR Regional Finals: Soccer

A nail-biting penalty shootout between the Intermediate Girton Boys team and BSE Intermediate boys team resulted in Girton emerging victorious. Due to that win, Girton was invited to attend the Loddon Mallee Regional (LMR) Finals on 24th May. On Monday, Girton arrived ready to win some games. 15 students accompanied by Mr Furphy and Ms Speed travelled to Epsom to participate in the LMR Finals. We were gifted a 3-game round-robin against St Joes Echuca, Mary McKillop Swan Hill, and Chaffey Secondary College Mildura.

The first game against St Joes Echuca, was a struggle to score early ending with a 0-0 draw at halftime. However, at the beginning of the second half Girton began to look a lot better resulting in 2 goals winning us the game with a final result of 2-0.

The early victory over Echuca allowed for motivation to be carried into the next game against Mary McKillop Swan Hill. This game was dominated from the beginning with everyone contributing to the goal tally. The final result of the game ended with a dominating 12-0 victory for Girton.

The third and final game was arguably the hardest game out of them all. In the initial minutes, Chaffey looked very strong getting very close to scoring however unable to get past our goalkeeper, Will Bowles. We went into the half-time 0-0 with Girton hopeful to continue a good stretch of form. However, this was not the case as unfortunately, Chaffey scored 2 goals back to back winning them the game 2-0 and sending Girton back to school with a second-place result.

The boys are all commended for their terrific result and should be very proud of themselves for making it this far. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to coach a lovely team of boys. A huge thank you goes to Ms Speed for organising the event and Mr Furphy who not only helped coach but also helped encourage them to continue strong even when we were losing. Another thank you to the parents who attended and supported Girton. The moral support given to our players was greatly appreciated.
