Sport

We have had a busy start to the winter season with many games at home. This weekend is the same with the majority of games at BMGS. Once again, we will be running a BBQ so any assistance would be appreciated.

Congratulations

As a member of the Penrith Cricket Club AW Green Shield team Isaac Nicholls (Year 10) competed in the AW Green Shield Championships. Isaac was the 8th ranked bowler - from 200 bowlers - over the Championship, taking 16 wickets after bowling a total of 97 overs. Isaac's best bowling figures were 4/13 from 10 overs, against Sutherland. He finished first on the Penrith team wicket takers.

Isaac’s achievements in The AW Green Shield are outstanding and he has represented himself, the Club and the region incredibly well. Isaac is to be congratulated on receiving the Colt/Metropolitan Player of the Year award for Penrith Grade Cricket Club. Congratulations, Isaac; we look forward to hearing of your future successes in cricket.

Concussion

It is very important that any player who receives a concussion during sport follows the school’s procedures for return to school and sport. The ISA return to sport card must be completed with staged checks by the doctor. This must then be returned to the school for the player to be cleared.

Most importantly, any person who receives a concussion should be off technology for the first 48 hours following the concussion. If you have any further questions regarding this please contact me.

COVID Guidelines

We still need to adhere to COVID guidelines for sport therefore all players, spectators and officials are required to use the QR code relevant to their sport to sign into the School grounds.

These codes will be located on the table at the gates of the School.

Please ensure that you are also social distancing around the grounds and accept any advice from the COVID officer. Thank you in advance for your support.

Spectators

BMGS is allowing two spectators per player for indoor venues and no limit on external venues. Please ensure wherever you are in the School that you are socially distancing.

Cross Country

If you do not own a BMGS Basketball singlet, you will need to hire a singlet from the uniform shop to compete in this Carnival. Monday and Tuesday next week are the last days that you will be able to pick up your running singlet. Please ensure you do so.

Please come and see me in my office if you have any questions regarding upcoming sporting events.

BMGS U14 defeated St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 68-21

The U14s enjoyed a fantastic day out. With a few players unavailable on the day, the fixture became a fast flowing 10-a-side fixture. After a tight first ten minutes, BMGS was trailing 5-7, with one try apiece and Jonathon McHugh going over for his first try of the season. BMGS then started to assert some scoreboard authority after securing good continuity at the breakdown creating opportunities for their playmakers. Rupert Fulton bagged a first half double with some fancy footwork and blistering speed. Not to be outdone, Arthur Pero-Gorrick also notched up a double shortly after,  and the U14s went into the half-time break 33-21 up. The second half was all one way traffic, with a fantastic 60m solo try to Rafferty Frosh coming off the back of some great recycled play. Rowan Brischetto showed once again that he can find his way to the try line, with his second try in as many games. Arthur picked up his third try of the afternoon after being rewarded from great support play when he received a gift 'pop pass' from Rowan following his long range run pulled up just short of the line. Rupert also picked up a second half double.

BMGS U15 were defeated by St. Andrew's Cathedral School, 38-16

The snap of sails and the waft of salt-laden sea air greeted the boys as they ran out onto Rushcutters Bay oval. St Andrew's dominated the scoreboard early. Oscar pilfered a number of balls from the breakdown and the forwards provided solid back up in patches. The lineouts and breakdown were areas where they dominated in the first half. Special mention must be made of Jasper who, having copped a knock to the nose, took a couple of minutes breather before heading back into the fray.  After half time the real U15s turned up, scoring three unanswered tries; the first to Oscar, who carved his way through a number of poor tackles to score out wide, which we were unable to convert. This was quickly followed by a well-placed kicked and rush defence from the backs, putting pressure on the St Andrew's attack line they were able to turn this ball over and Rupert ran through to score near the posts.  A final try can from two quick taps, one on the halfway and another ten metres from the line, with Rupert crashing over from close range.  An untimely lapse in concentration allowed the opposition to cross over for two late tries.

It was a great effort and come back; with ball in hand the U15s looked unbeatable, however, there were plenty of good signs, and much to work on at training.

BMGS 1st XV drew with St Andrew's Cathedral School, 5-5

This week the First XV took on St Andrew's Cathedral School at Rushcutters’s Bay. Both teams came into the third round with one win apiece and were evenly matched. The students were rusty at the beginning of the game, with poor errors and lack of discipline causing penalties and allowing St Andrew's to stay in the game. The students were tested in defense and buckled under the pressure, allowing a try to St Andrew's. With the opposition ahead, the students rallied and were able to build momentum and gain territory in the match. With some great work from the forwards from the lineouts and a strong maul, the students were able to put St Andrew's defense under a lot of pressure on their try line. Gaps were able to open up near the ruck and the team’s scrumhalf, Jack Harriott was able to score a try, with a quick scoop from dummy half. The team went into the half-time break with 5-5. Unfortunately, just moments into the second half a serious injury of a player on St Andrew’s caused a major stoppage to the game. Due to the delay and stoppage of play; the match ended in a 5-5 draw. This week the students will be at home, facing Redfield College.

Netball

First VII defeated St Spyridon, 48-21

A big thank you from all of the Firsts to Tarana who filled in for us on Saturday (and did a superb job). Also kudos to our Netball captain Phoebe, who was told 10 minutes before the game that she would be shooting and didn't let us down. In fact, she had a blinder of a game. All of our players enjoyed the game thoroughly, with the chance to test their skills in unfamiliar positions. Notable were Ellen's surprise shooting skills, Olivia's glorious defensive prowess and Elizas zippy speed and preciseness in WA. Who knew? Thank you all of the players Tarana, Ella, Phoebe, Olivia, Mia, Lorena, Ellen and Eliza for a wonderful game.

BMGS Opens defeated St Spyridon, 38-24

Another great game this week girls! We continued to improve our footwork from last week. Each quarter built upon the lead you made in the first quarter. Strong defensive effort from everyone meant that if we lost the ball we worked very hard to get it back. Elyse and Lucia shot very well, capitalising on those turnovers.  This week's focus is to work on the bunching and find balance on the entire court. Well done!

BMGS Intermediates defeated Chevalier College, 27-2

A good result and a fun game for our Inters. Lovely defending from Imogen, Bella, Kate, Josie and Hayley saw the ball returned time after time to the attack end. Alana spent the whole game at WA and showed speed and perfect timing. As a team we nearly hit our target of 30 goals for the match. The steady improvement each game is a pleasure to watch.

BMGS Juniors were defeated by Chevalier College, 28-40-28

Well done to the girls for never giving up in what proved to be a tough game. We started off lacking the same energy that we have come to expect from previous games and that led to Chevalier taking an early lead. Whilst we weren’t able to catch up, the girls worked hard to ensure that they never let the game get out of their reach. Zara played a fantastic game at GD and the shooting duo of Jess and Liz ensured that defensive efforts were rewarded with points on the scoreboard. We know we need to work on driving towards the ball and re-offering into free space. This will be a key focus at training next session!

BMGS Open C defeated by Barker College, 8-0

This week the Open Cs had a happy win. Our team showed up at 7:30am, on freezing, cold morning, with occasional bouts of sleet, to begin their warm up.  With the game underway and, after numerous moments of excitement, we finally scored, and from then on we were just having fun. The score was 0-8, but behind that score were the multiple sacrifices everyone made to give up their morning so we could play, along with many close calls that could have led to a score of double digits. Our thanks to our parents, coaches and teachers and the other team (Barker) for giving up your time and effort, and we look forward to the game next weekend.

BMGS Junior A were defeated by Barker College, 2-0

We had a great first half against Barker; holding the score line at half time to 0-0. As a team, we held our positions really well and opened up the play out wide; creating open space and opportunities for our forwards to run onto the ball. Ashleigh worked tirelessly as our goal keeper in the first half to shut down the solid shots at goal coming from Barker’s forwards. In the second half, we unfortunately conceded two goals. However, our incredible defending; particularly by our back line allowed us to hold the two goal difference for the remainder of the half. Babette did some effective saves as our goal keeper in the second half and distributed the ball in a way that allowed our passes to build up the field to our forwards; a key part of our game we are still working towards improving on. I would like to acknowledge our midfielders Meenatchi, Billy and Matilda, who intentionally opened up the space during our counter-attacks and were passing great ‘through’ balls to each other and to our forwards. I look forward to seeing the great teamwork, early and effective first touches on the ball and constant movement off the ball in our next game.

BMGS First XI were defeated by Barker collage, 6-0

The First XI had a difficult game this weekend as we were playing Barker College. We knew that going into the game that it was going to be hard and that we needed to bring our A game. Our goal for this game was to walk away with a maximum of six goals scored against us, because Barker has defeated both CCGS and Oakhill College with 7+ goals. The first half of the game was challenging, with four goals scored against us and the loss of a player due to a concussion. The girls played well and we were able to keep up with the Barker girls for most of the game and, even though we lost 6-0, we all walked away pleased with the way we played.  Thank you again to Darcy and Hannah from the Open C team for playing up for us.

Boys’ Football

BMGS 14s were defeated by Chevalier College, 7-0

Extreme winds and some light rainfall made for a rather unusual match this Saturday, in which the ball seemed to go in a completely random direction away from where it was kicked. Chevalier took advantage of the wind blowing towards the BMGS goal and managed to get a few good goals in during the match’s first quarter, but BMGS was able to defend well for the remainder of the second half, after becoming accustomed to the extreme conditions. This match was also played on a small hockey field, making for an action-packed, high octane playstyle. The second half was also just as exciting, this time with a lot more action from BMGS, helped by switching of sides and the direction of the wind, unfortunately without any successful shots at goal and Chevalier managed a few more goals before the full-time whistle blew. The match did show a large relative improvement on previous weeks and was also generally rather amusing.

BMGS U15 were defeated by Chevalier College, 4-3

The BMGS U15s boys team had a hard game against Chevalier College. The game was delayed by poor weather conditions and the halves were shortened to accommodate this fact. The team struggled through the first half as the Chevalier forwards attacked, scoring three goals despite the best efforts of the BMGS defence. BMGS made a comeback in the second half, levelling the score to 3-3, and it was looking to either be a tie or win for the BMGS boys.  However, six minutes before the end of the game, the Chevalier strikers pierced the BMGS defence scoring one goal and turning the game in their favour. In the end Chevalier College won by one goal, with a final score of 3-4 their way. Goals were scored by Harry Daniels (2) and Tom O'Connor (1).

Ben Delaney

BMGS 2nd XI defeated Chevalier College, 3-2

The game started well for the 2nd XI, with Vaughan Dugdale receiving a well-placed through ball and finding the back of the net. Barely two minutes later, co-captain Isaac Nicholls scored with a tap-in from a free kick that was well struck but just wide. We were extremely dominant in the first half, even winning a penalty in the closing minutes, but unfortunately not converting it. In the second half, however, our fatigued team, who were surviving on only eleven players, three of whom were injured or sick, were overtaken by the opposition, who scored from kick-off and then scored again just a few minutes later. However, the team fought hard and managed to work the ball up to Chev’s box, keeping possession and then forcing an own goal to complete a deserved 3-2 win for our team. An excellent effort from the Seconds, with some very nice tackles and pinpoint through balls, The game was well captained by Isaac and Will.

BMGS First XI drew with Chevalier College, 1-1

An intense match of penalties, freekicks and counter attacks from both teams took place in this week's match. The boys worked hard to keep the game inside of their opponents’ half but, unfortunately, this intensity from the Forwards left a hole in the back line, through which a Chev striker exploited and ultimately scored. Despite this, the boys maintained their intensity, firing shots with every chance given to them but to no avail until, in the final minutes of the game, team Captain Wil Stacy scored a meticulous penalty that tied the game up for a final score of 1-1.
