High Potential and Gifted Education
UOW Learning Labs
In the next week, selected students from Years 1 to 6 will receive a letter to participate in Learning Labs, an enrichment program for high achieving students presented by the Outreach and Widening Participation Unit at the University of Wollongong. Workshops run over one and two-days and are a great opportunity for students to explore their areas of interest. There will be diverse and innovative workshops presented by academics and teachers with specialist training or a specific interest area. Each workshop will be pitched at a flexible two years above their grade level. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Chatterton if you have any further questions.
Stage 3 Enrichment
Last term, selected students from Years 5 and 6 participated in a writing enrichment group with Ms Higgins. As part of this, students had the opportunity to enter in the Red Room Poetry Poem Forest Prize Competition in recognition of World Threatened Species Day. We are incredibly excited to announce that Lucy B’s poem, The Bush Fights Back, was selected to be published on the website. The Bush Fights Back

For there once was a forest that sways quiet and free. Where pines piece the sky, sparkling with dew. Rivers and creeks rush like giant firehoses that twinkle with glee. Vines scramble ever so slowly up tall trees, until there was no more. Raging flames flutter like ballet dancers. Young tree saplings fall to ash. As for creatures, spend months in vain. The forest may not exist one more day, with soil to dust. Nature once made itself, and now it's destroying it. For when was it cruel and actually deserved pain? As it seemed to only create a sacrifice for itself. Slowly trees began to sprout with each rainfall, and soon touched the blue sky. Animals returned once more and people hoped that this would never happen again, forever.
