Miss Melissa Connor

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been wonderful to welcome back all our enthusiastic learners for Term 4.

In Week 1 Miss Connor and Mrs Chatterton were lucky enough to attend a 2 day conference with leading Maths teacher Anita Chin. They learnt a lot and have returned to school with lots of new strategies and ideas to improve Maths teaching at our school and many wonderful activities to show the teachers and students.

This week Year 5 have completed their Check In Assessments for Reading and Maths and next week it will be the turn of Year 3 and 4. These assessments give the teachers lots of valuable information about what the students know and which areas to focus on for the rest of the year. The students are to be congratulated for approaching these assessments in a calm and mature manner and showing persistence and a positive attitude.

We have been straight back into our Maths learning this term. Our preschool Mathematicians have been predicting, estimating and measuring as they have been learning about mass. They really enjoyed using an equal arm balance to find out which toys were heavier and which toys were lighter.

The Kindergarten Mathematicians have been practicing their addition and subtraction skills by playing games to consolidate their knowledge of the 'Friends of 10'. These are pairs of numbers that add up to 10. If you have a Kindergarten learner in your family see how many 'Friends of 10' they can tell you.

Year 2 have begun learning about Place Value and have enjoyed playing games with cards, dice and blocks to demonstrate their understanding. Not only are they wonderful Mathematicians but they have been playing fairly, taking turns and being happy for the winner of the game.

Stage 2 have been working in pairs to complete a challenge from Miss Connor to see if they can partition numbers in the standard and non standard forms. There has been much discussion, planning, teamwork, cutting and gluing and everyone has been proud of their work.

We are looking forward to lots of wonderful Mathematical learning in Term 4!
