Year 4 Measurement Unit

Year 4 Teaching Pirates

From Kristen, Year 4 Teacher

At the end of term 3's Measurement Unit, we investigated mass looking at grams and kilograms. Students had to make a boat using recyclable materials, with the aim of it floating. Then we estimated using formal measurement questions :

  1. What mass we thought the boat would hold before it sank
  2. Who would sink the boats?

The answer? PIRATES of COURSE!

The following day was Pirate day, the pirates used cannonballs (weights) to try and sink the boats. We had to first determine the weight we selected as our cannonball, then record it, keeping a running total of the mass, until we successfully sank the boat.

It was fun to count down, 3,2, 1, FIRE! As the pirates sent the cannonball towards the boats.

The boat that held the most mass before it sank was from Year 4A, which held 1.2kg, Alem reminds us this is the same as 1200 grams.

Congratulations to the students on your costumes and being maths-wise pirates.
