Principal's Report

By Frank Catalano

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

Welcome to the first newsletter for Term Four and I trust everyone has had a fabulous school holiday break.

As per usual, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to see me at school, or contact me on 9802 9938 or frank.catalano@education.vic.edu.au

I always find the beginning of a new term extremely exciting as the children and staff share their holiday stories with enthusiasm and joy. Regardless of what everyone got up to the real issue is that the children and staff have returned to school with a ‘bounce in their step’ as everyone is now ready for a new term of learning.

As per usual there are so many things planned for our school community, may I encourage you to diarise events by scrolling through the “Important Dates for Your Diary” section within our newsletter.

Welcome to the following new students

May I extend a very warm welcome to the following new children and their families to the Glen Waverley PS family:

Year 1: Grace, Osman and Tim

Year 4: Mario and James

Year 5: Amy and Henry

Facilities Update

Throughout the school holidays the following projects were completed:

  • Solar panels - 88 solar panels were installed on the gymnasium roof
  • Water tanks - were installed adjacent to the gymnasium and the Out of School Hours Care program/Music building and
  • Main building external wall – the tiles which were ‘buckling’ have been removed and replaced with an alternative panelling.

International School Visit

Last week we had the pleasure of the Founder, Principal and Curriculum leader from the Jhapa Model English School, Nepal, visit us as we embark on the process of developing a ‘sister school’ relationship with our school. Throughout the visit we visited numerous classrooms where the children shared their learning and the staff pedagogical practices.

I eagerly look forward to continuing this process and sharing what we plan with the school community in due course.

House Captains Initiative

Earlier in the year the House Captains approached me to discuss the possibility of including a sports t-shirt as part of the Year 6 uniform list. Naturally, I was thrilled with this as it demonstrates initiative, commitment, and perseverance. We also discovered that our school’s AFL jumpers need to be updated so we combined the process.

Recently the children completed this project and below is a copy of the speech they wrote for a school assembly:

Good morning GWPS, we are your 2022 House captains.
Today we are going to present the winners of the school and AFL uniform. The people that helped with the uniform process are Mr. Catalano, Miss Krsteska and our house captain peers.

The Years 4, 5 and 6’s have voted on what they thought was the most appealing. We are very excited to be a part of this and now we want to share our journey going through this process.

At the start of our journey, we decided to make a sports uniform on our behalf of the passion project. We started by making some prototypes on a website called Owayo 3D designer. It was hard to choose as all the designs were up to notch. After that we came up with 4-5 designs and then, we went to Mr. Catalano to share what we came up with.

Ms. Krsteska gave us a suggestion to add a student voice to our process. So, we made posters to tell everyone about our project. After that we had quite a few designs that came to us. We loved all of them. It was very hard to pick but we had to choose 4 for the school uniform and 3 for the AFL jersey.

In the end we picked out final 4 and 3 designs, this week we came together and made a voting poster. The 4,5 and 6’s voted which designs they liked then we got all the votes and had our final designs.

On Wednesday we put up our journey into this speech and decided we were going to present it today. We are very glad that we were able to contribute to a process that will be appreciated in the future. And now we are here to share the final designs.

We would also like to thank Mr. Catalano, Ms. Krsteska, Mrs. Sparks, Mr. Parker, Mrs. Hassiotis, and the uniform shop people for helping with this, we couldn’t have done it without them.

Thank you for listening, and next year we’ll have your uniform ready.

On Monday 10th October it was fabulous to see the House Captains present to School Council and their families the process, journey, challenges and learning they undertook as they completed the process of organising a Year 6 Sports T-shirt and an updated AFL jumper

  • The children were absolutely amazing and a real pleasure to see as they confidently shared their journey and the final products
  • From here, we are waiting for the ‘mock ups’ to be created before the T-shirts go into production and should be ready for purchasing early next year
  • The children also organised for the AFL jumpers to be sponsored by the uniform company who will supply them at no cost to our school
  • The above is just another example of how student choice, student voice and student agency can make a real difference

Sanvi 6ESanvi of 6E has received the Term Three 2022 Principal’s Learning Award! Throughout Term Three, Sanvi demonstrated tremendous development in all areas of learning. She built her confidence, interacting positively with her classmates and other learners across the school. This confidence was evident on Year 6 Camp, where Sanvi displayed a willingness to try new things and step outside of her comfort zone. She displayed a desire to learn and never hesitated to seek out additional challenge. Sanvi’s creativity in Writing and Inquiry were highlights of an extremely successful term of learning. Congratulations Sanvi on a wonderful Term Three!
Aaron6FDear Aaron, congratulations on this recognition. I am extremely proud of your achievements in your academic, social and emotional learning. You have demonstrated a positive mindset and comfort in being uncomfortable when taking a risk. And it is paying off! You are achieving so much more success because you believe you can. It’s been wonderful seeing you develop positive relationships and manage challenges when they arise. This has been a result of flexible thinking, compromise, empathy and accepting different perspectives.  Well done for all the work you’ve out into this. Keep it up!

2023 Enrolments

I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2023 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly as we only have a very small number of positions available. I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Daniel, Daria or Julie in the main office as soon as possible.

We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website – https://www.glenps.vic.edu.au/page/59/Prospective-Families

School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also upon request.  Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.
