VCAL, VET and LEAP

What is VCAL?
VCAL offers students a more hands on Senior School Pathway which includes TAFE and work placement. This allows students to develop as a person, build employability skills and experience volunteering as an active citizen. Three days a week are spent at Nazareth studying Technology, Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development, Religion and Work Related Skills. Generally VCAL students have a day a week for a chosen TAFE Vocational Education & Training Course (VET) and a day to be out on work placement in their TAFE Industry Course.
To provide a wide range of VET Courses for students, local schools, private providers and TAFEs invite students to apply for positions in their VET classes. In fact, there is something for everyone, from the trades, sport and recreation, media and the arts, business and IT, floristry & fashion design, tourism and hospitality, lab assistance, community services and health, to name just a few!
The College’s Joseph Centre is a hive of activity when our students share their experiences and demonstrate their growing skills.
The VCAL Staff work enthusiastically with this energetic, bright group of adolescents.

Partnership with Carwatha College – VET Sport & Recreation with a Soccer Focus
This year we are excited to offer students in Years 10 – 12 the chance to specialise in Soccer as part of their VET Certificate II Sport & Recreation Course. This qualification is obtained over the school year, with students able to articulate into a Certificate III in the following year should they decide to pursue greater skills and knowledge in Soccer. Qualified experienced coaches guide our students with the theoretical and practical components of Sport & Recreation.
Any students interested in undertaking this course need to email caitlin.mackay@nazareth.vic.edu.au or speak to Elena directly in the Careers Centre. This VET Course runs from 1.30 pm – 5.00 pm every Wednesday and is located just a three minute walk from Nazareth College.
GET VET – What is VET?
Vocational Education and Training (VET) is offered to senior secondary students across Victoria. A VET Course combines the theory with practical application. At Nazareth, students in Years 11 and 12 can choose a VET Course of their choice as part of their VCE or VCAL. Select Year 10 students are also offered acceleration in these courses and our Year 10 LEAP students work with Swinburne KIOSC Wantirna staff to create an engaging Semester 2 of learning as they make choices about their final years at school.
Nazareth offers VET Music Performance and VET Dance on campus and these subjects we offer to local students form other schools too. Our students travel to an array of VET Providers such as Swinburne, Box Hill Institute, Chisholm, Holmesglen Institute, Hallam Senior Secondary College, Dame Elizabeth Murdoch College, Carwatha College, Skillinvest, Employease, and Narre Warren Learning Centre. Each of these providers have purpose built facilities and experienced trainers.
There are limited places still available in some VET Courses. Interested students need to see Elena by Monday 8 February.
Check out the online publication to learn more about VET.
