Wellbeing Report

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome back to a new year! We are really excited about the year ahead and look forward to working with everyone in the school community to create opportunities to succeed not just academically, but socially and emotionally also.

NAZARETH SCHOOLTV – AN EXTENSIVE ONLINE WELLBEING WEBSITE FOR PARENTS

It’s never been more challenging for parents to raise happy, healthy and resilient children. After a year like never before, parents need to be informed with clear, fact-based information on the many challenges faced by today’s youth. SchoolTV is an online resource that is now available to our parents. Each edition will address a major topic with expert interviews, fact sheets, parent quiz, recommended apps, books and much more. SchoolTV aggregates information from many great resources such as BeyondBlue and ReachOut, amongst others. SchoolTV provides a single stream of independent factual information that saves parents time and confusion of searching online across multiple sites for information.

SchoolTV covers topics such as youth anxiety, transition, surviving Year 12, depression, self-harm, drug and alcohol use, cyberbullying and many others, offering clear explanations and guidance. There are also links to relevant resources and website for further information.

TRANSITION

Transition occurs at this time of year for all students – moving into a new Year level, with different classmates, new teachers, different classrooms and more challenging curriculum can be difficult, causing stress and anxiety.

Many strategies have been implemented here at school to ensure the transition is smooth and happy for all. It can be a challenging time and requires some level of resilience and a positive attitude to new experiences and people.

YEAR 7 TRANSITION

Starting Year 7 poses many new challenges, but also offers exciting opportunities. It comes with a number of mixed feelings. Unfortunately for many Grade 6 students, 2020 was marred with school closures and remote learning due to the pandemic and the overall impact of this is still unknown. For many students, regular orientation activities at the end of 2020 were less than ideal. Therefore, many students may be feeling a little bit more anxious than usual about their expectations of starting Year 7. Grasping new skills and establishing new study practices can quickly become daunting and overwhelming. During this time of transition, parents and carers need to be supportive, but also realistic in their expectations. This is an important milestone in your child’s life. There will be feelings of exhilaration, but also the fear of the unknown. Therefore, it will be important for parents and carers to be vigilant in monitoring their child’s mood and mental health during this time. They could easily become overly anxious or even depressed. SchoolTV has a new Special Report on this topic, where you will find a number of strategies offered that can make this transition period smoother and start things off on the right foot! We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered.
