Global Connections

Global Connections Program

Lucie Dickens, Global Connections Program Director

On Tuesday 9 November 6.00pm (Melbourne time), our Year 7 students were able to participate in our second Virtual Forum with Todoroki High School students from Tokyo, Japan.

As part of the Global Connections co-curricular activity, these students wrote articles about specific sports which are culturally popular in Australia and prepared questions about the role of sport in Japan.

The following questions were sent to Todoroki students prior to the Forum.

Questions:

  • What is the most popular sport in Japan?
  • Is there a sport that is only played in Japan?
  • How much sport do you do at school?
  • Do you get to play against other schools?
  • What was your experience of the Olympic games?
  • What is the sport that Japan won the most medals in?

We were so fortunate to also hear Todoroki students’ perspective on the Olympic games which took place in their home city of Tokyo. Lots of interesting facts and ideas were exchanged, including fun activities that are run as part of their sports day which we can now share with our PE staff.

We also found out that the Todoroki High School Cheerleading team is ranked 1st nationally in Japan. I was very impressed with how confidently our Year 7 students spoke, and encourage any Years 7 to 12 student interested in joining us for our next virtual forum, to contact me dickensl@kilvington.vic.edu.au or meet with us at lunchtime on Day 5 in Room MSC3.

VIRTUAL FORUM – Tuesday 9 November, 2021

  • Audience:  Todoroki High School, Japan and Kilvington Grammar School, Australia
  • Topic of discussion: Sport in Japan and  Australia

From Isabella Ou - Swimming

Swimming is a widely known and popular sport in Australia. In this year's Olympics held in Tokyo Japan, over half of Australia’s gold medals were from swimming! All kids in Australia know how to swim because it is very common.

There are many talented swimmers in Australia. If you watched the swimming during the Olympics, you may know some very successful swimmers such as Emma McKeon (who is now the most decorated Australian athlete ever), Kyle Chalmers, Cate Campbell, Ariane Titmus, Kaylee Mckeown and many more!

At Kilvington, we have a whole day dedicated to swimming - it’s called a Swimming Carnival. It’s a friendly competition between our four Houses. We compete in butterfly, relay, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle. At the end of the day, there is a friendly competition between staff and Year 12 students.

From Vicky Tian - AFL

AFL - AFL stands for Australian Football League; it is very common in Australia. It has been played for over 100 years. Thousands of fans of the footy come to see the AFL, debating who they think will win. If you ask a random Australian about AFL, they will know what you’re talking about.

AFL is very interesting and you can’t miss it. It is very important because it brings a lot of joy to Australians, and it is very fun to watch except when they start tackling each other to the ground. Because of this, the players are always injured. There are 18 AFL teams. Here are some of them: Western Bull dogs, Collingwood, Richmond Tigers, Sydney Swans, Essendon, Melbourne, Adelaide Crows and Geelong Cats.

From Diya James - Netball

こんいちわとどらきがくせい、

初めまして、

わたしのなまえわヂイヤです。わたしは十三さいです。だんすわがすきです。

I’ve written an overview all about a very common sport played in Australia – netball!!

Hope you enjoy! I’d love to speak with you soon!

Netball is a ball sport played by two teams of seven players. Games are played on a rectangular court with raised goal rings at each end. The object is to score goals from within a defined area, by throwing a ball into a ring. Netball is the most popular women's sport in Australia with an estimated one million players nationwide.

The most common attire in netball is a dress, or skirt made from lycra (the same material as bathers). It is very similar to basketball, except you aren’t allowed to bounce the ball, move with the ball or hold it for more than three seconds! Netball is a non-contact sport, meaning that you can’t touch the other players, or swipe the ball off them.

If you decide to come to Melbourne as an exchange student, we’d love to teach you some netball and maybe even play some matches!

どうぞよろしく!

ありがとございました!
