YEAR 9 SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH AWARDS

All Year 9 students completed a photography assignment in Term 2. As part of the Physics topic of Light and Lenses, students needed to photograph a scientific concept and explain the science of their photos in a report.

The Year 9 teachers chose the top assignments to be entered into the Science Teachers Association of Victoria (STAV) annual Science Talent Search Competition. Students who took part in this competition attended a remote judging day, where they needed to explain their assignment to a panel. The Science Faculty wish to congratulate the following students:

  • Adele Takle who won a Major Bursary (one of only two awards in the state!) for her project ‘Refraction in Water’.
  • Zak Mckinnon, who won a Minor Bursary   (one of four awards in the state!) for his project, ‘Life Cycle of Flowers’.
  • Victoria Hu, who won a Minor Bursary    (one of four awards in the state!) for her project, ‘Geomorphology of Victorian Geological Features.’

The above students attended a virtual award ceremony on November 8 with STAV, their parents and Ms Padgett who presented the awards.

A thank you to Year 9 students and Year 9 teachers for their involvement with this project, and a special thanks to Mr Michael Schmidt for running this project for the Year 9s.

TOY TIME

Toy Time is an annual STEAM project completed at Kilvington. Students design and build a toy that teach a Year 3 student about Forces.

This is a joint project from the Science, Digital Technologies, Art and Mathematics Faculties, where students show their understanding of each of these different areas in their final project.

After starting this project in Term 2, we were very pleased to be able to bring this project to a close in Term 4.

The Science Leaders, Elena Stuckey de la Banda, Grace Kiosoglous and Natasha Tsirelas came to judge the projects and gave a prize to one group from each class based on the build quality of the toy, and how well it teaches about Forces.
