Student Representative Council

Student Leadership Days!

This week, Rees House was buzzing with enthusiasm and excitement from our Student Leaders while they participated in two days of working together, planning for 2021 and developing their leadership skills. Student undertook many games and tasks, all while developing their skills in communication, feedback, teamwork, goal setting, reflecting, being a leader and public speaking. All Leaders approached the two days with passion and energy and left feeling exited to lead the students at Wantirna College in 2021! The days concluded with a celebratory afternoon tea with our Staff Leaders. I look forward to seeing all students who are interested in being a leader at the first SRC meeting in 2021.

What a way to get excited about leadership in 2021!

From building marshmallow towers and telling group stories, to planning our own council meetings, these leadership training days were an opportunity for us to develop our leadership skills and gain an understanding of what leadership means at Wantirna College. It gave us the chance to brainstorm for the coming year, and it was amazing to hear everyone’s thoughts, ideas, and opinions.

In each activity, we were all challenged in a range of different ways and it was inspiring to see people pushing themselves to develop their skills. I think we have created an extremely strong base for student voice, and I cannot wait to see where we go from here.

Thank you to past students Sam, Isabelle, Alexis, and Ebony, as well as the leading teachers at Wantirna College, for coming in and giving us some insight into leadership and how we can develop as student leaders.

A very big thank you to Miss Lewis for organising and planning such an incredible two days. Your dedication to the 2021 leadership team is something we are all extremely grateful for.

Lastly, a big shoutout to all the students who attended these two leadership training days. It was amazing getting to know each and every one of you and I am so excited to work with and support you as we head into 2021!

My experience definitely wasn’t one that I expected it to be, but that is good because you should always expect the unexpected. I knew I was going to enjoy the two days, but I didn’t know that all these amazing people I was going to be surrounded by, were this supportive and funny. Overall, this experience was one of many amazing things that is coming for student leadership in 2021 and beyond.

On Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th of December, a 2-day Leadership Workshop was held by Ms Lewis in Rees House. The course was open to any students who wanted to develop and learn new leadership skills. Both days were very enjoyable, and we did many different activities that provided us with several tips and advice that would help us be a better leader, in the years to come. Some of those skills were teamwork, public speaking, motivating others, time management, organisational skills and providing feedback. Some of the activities were, for example, making the highest tower with skewers and marshmallows in a group where each round we would get more restrictions (teamwork), having someone describe a picture to someone who can’t see it and instruct them how to draw it as specific as possible, so the drawer has a replica of whatever is on the whiteboard (communication) and an activity where we would have to think on our feet and continue a story based off pictures that are projected onto the whiteboard for 20 seconds (public speaking). Overall, it was a very enjoyable workshop that I learned a lot of leadership skills from, and I would definitely attend again in the future.
