SCHOOL TRAVEL and SAFETY

I must say it has been lovely this year to meet and greet students coming in via the Year 3-6 gates of a morning. It also has allowed me to observe the comings and goings of how students are getting to school. Certainly last year in Term 4 I could see an increase in active travel which was great to see. We were running out of spaces to house all the bikes and scooters which is actually a nice problem to have.

This year I have noticed there has been a decrease in active travel and I have also had a few parents approach me about student safety around the Drummond Street Oval car park. While it appears that parents are dropping off and leaving quite efficiently there have been some concerns raised about vehicles parking in non-marked spots as well as other infringements.

My concern is also around the number of students and families walking through the middle of the car park. I have been conscious of students not looking to see if cars’ head or rear lights are engaged to indicate the engine is running and they are about to pull out. Please model and encourage your children to hop on the public footpath as soon as they can. I know some parents have spoken to me about the possibility of getting a path edging the Bowls Club to enable a safe route.  As this is public land, this is an idea that can be raised by parents by contacting Monash Council.

I read in the paper on the weekend that a Victorian school, similar to ours in that it is located on a congested main road, has engaged with the Bicycle Network and Council to temporarily ban cars from a 200 metre stretch of road to encourage safer travel during pick up and drop off. I will be curious to see the results of this study.
