Sport

This weekend sees the last round of games for the Summer ISA competition. The finals will be held on the 13th March at various venues. Parents are encouraged to attend finals where spectators are permitted. Final details will be listed in next week’s newsletter.

Congratulations

Rosie Sullivan was one of 25 players recently selected to trial for the U18s Sydney METS Touch Football squad. This is a representative team formed by players from the Blue Mountains, Balmain, Penrith, Canterbury and West’s Magpie Touch Football clubs. This is an amazing achievement considering Rosie has only played at one State Cup Carnival.  We wish her all the best in the next stage of the selection process.

Training and Games

I remind all students who choose to play in BMGS sporting teams that both training and games are compulsory for the duration of the season. Please do not book appointments on a training day. As many of our coaches travel a long distance to attend training, and students are asked to be respectful for the time our Coaches are investing in our sporting programs by attending all training sessions.

If  you are unable to attend either a game or a training session then an email must be sent by parents to the MIC of the specific sport. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Senior School Swimming Carnival

Last Friday we held the BMGS Swimming Carnival. The weather was fantastic and it was great to see many students competing on the day. Attendance at all House Carnivals is compulsory for students, even if they are unable to complete.

Cross Country Carnival

The BMGS Cross Country Carnival will be held next Friday, 12th March. I encourage all students to compete at this event to support their House in the pursuit of the House Shield.

ISA Swimming

The ISA Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday, 10th March at SOPAC, Homebush. The Swimming Squad has been posted on the Sports Noticeboard and an email providing all details of the Carnival has been sent to those students who have been selected to represent BMGS at the Carnival.

Please ensure that notes are returned promptly as there is only a short turnaround for entries to be finalised.

Please come and see me in my office if you have any questions regarding upcoming sporting events.

ISA Basketball - Round 4 - 27th February, 2021

The Boys' Blue teams produced a well-rounded performance after last week’s challenge, with all three teams walking away with dominant victories against Oxley College. It is wonderful to see strength of character and sportsmanship towards the opposition teams despite differences in abilities. The Boys' Gold teams were in the fight across all five games against Redlands, with each game being decided within the final ten minutes. The 13s Gold and Second V demonstrated great perseverance and teamwork in both games but fell just short of victory. The First V, 15s Gold and 14s Gold teams were all involved in back-and-forth games where each team’s defensive efforts proved to be the deciding factor that allowed them to come away wins.

For the girls' teams, the Open C team won via forfeit; as Barker College were unable to field a team through illness and injuries. Both teams were looking forward to playing against each other again, as the reverse fixture was a exciting game which ended in a draw. The First V and Intermediate B teams produced impressive fight backs after trailing early in both games and, despite falling short at the final whistle, both teams should be encouraged by their consistent effort throughout the game. The Junior D team fought hard throughout their game and continued to demonstrate commitment and perseverance as they towards achieving their first victory. All players have come a long way from their very first game in Term 4. Early on in their match, the Junior B team was challenged by and confident Oxley team, eventually pulling away after half-time to remain undefeated.

I continue to be encouraged by the overall development of the program this season, seeing our coaches work with a range of abilities and the more experienced players taking the opportunity support others in their teams. Round 5 will see the Girls' First V host Barker College, while the remaining Girls' teams travel to Barker College and Oakhill College. The Boys' Blue teams host Oakhill College while the Boys' Gold teams travel to St Pius X College.

We will continue to take the opportunities at home/away to take Team photos in preparation for Presentation Night. Please see your coach on arrival at your venue to take photos. Could all players – including those who are currently injured - ensure they attend your games in the correct uniform.

Touch Football - NSW Junior State Cup

Last Friday-Sunday Clodagh McDermott, Ellen Glasson, Katerina Reynolds, Taylor McLeod, Ruby Charlton and Rosie Sullivan represented the Blue Mountains at the NSW Junior State Cup Touch Football Championships (Under 18s).

For most of these girls it was their first experience playing representative Touch Football. They learnt a lot over the three days of competition, and all players come back with more confidence and playing ability.

Special mention must be made of to Rosie Sullivan who is one of 25 players who were selected to trial for the Sydney METS team. This is a tremendous achievement. Well done Rosie!
