Grade 4

This Term Level Four have been exploring Growth Mindset as part of their Inquiry unit of work. The students have been reading the book Wonder by RJ Palacio which is about August (Auggie) Pullman who was born with a severe facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school.

Starting 5th grade at a school, Auggie wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid but his classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face. The Year 4 teachers selected this text as a way to explore the true nature of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and ultimately kindness. Auggie is a hero for the ages, one who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. 

It has been wonderful to see the students grow in their understanding of empathy and acceptance of others.
