A factual and descriptive account of THE ANZACS

                Written by Cliff, Aryan, Patrick,

                      Jennifer and Eleni    Year 3

This term, an Extension and Enrichment program has begun for selected groups of students in Year 3 and 5. Year 3 students recently shared their understandings about ANZAC day, and personal experiences of participating in ANZAC Day ceremonies. Together, we read the story “One Minutes Silence” and explored the complexities the soldiers faced in battle. After creating a list of descriptive words, students incorporated these into factual pieces of information. They then created a visual image, depicting the life of a soldier at Gallipoli, through written expression. Students organised their ideas, selected a range of meaningful words and composed  an imaginative  text.

EMOTIONS

Men and young boys going off to the war, were excited about the adventure ahead. Many were strong and brave, others thought it would be fun, whilst some were petrified.

“My heart was racing so much, I could feel it beating. In the sudden silence, as we were ready to charge, I felt a shiver go down my spine.”

GALLIPOLI

The Gallipoli landscape was a mountainous terrain with steep hills and gullies. The soldiers dug deep trenches into the ground, for shelter from the battle.

“I huddled into my corner dugout of the narrow trench, and doubted that I would ever get to sleep. My thoughts wandered back to my family at home, as I listened to the chatter of men up the line.”

WEATHER

The troops suffered in the harsh weather conditions. It was either so hot, the terrain seemed lifeless, (except for the blowflies) or in winter, it was bitterly cold.

“The dust swirls around my face and stings my eyes. My thirst can’t be satisfied. The heat of the sun beating on my face is unbearable.”
