Primary Co-curricular
Primary Co-curricular
The end of Term 1 sport is fast approaching with only two weeks remaining for most teams. Unfortunately the season has already finished for the Year 4/5 tennis team due to another school pulling out of the competition and some unfortunate scheduling.
Cricket
Our Year 6/7 cricketers defeated Scotch in a close match at Leroy Oval. Blackfriars batted first and set Scotch a modest total, but the boys bowled and fielded well to defend it. The Year 4/5 boys lost in a reduced overs match against Rostrevor. The original field was washed out so they headed to St Dominic’s Oval and played on the turf. The boys restricted Rostrevor to a gettable score but then threw a few wickets away and didn’t really challenge the Rostrevor score. The Kanga boys played against St Pauls Lutheran and again enjoyed their cricket. Unfortunately the boys lost this week but now get a chance against Rosary on Friday. Thanks to Mrs West for supervising the team.
Tennis
The Primary A1/A2 tennis team found St Ignatius far too strong winning only the one set. Mr Carroll was pleased with some of the progress shown from our boys and some of the matches were of good quality. Mr Vo’s B2 tennis team got some revenge on St Michaels 1, defeating them 6 sets to 3 in an improved display. This week sees the boys front up against St Michaels 2 in what is now a home match. Mrs LaForgia’s Year 4/5 team found Westminster too tough at Blair Athol Tennis Club. The boys fought hard but the more experienced Westminster team got the win in the final game of the term.
Auskick Registration
Those families that have nominated Auskick for Term 2 should be able to register within the next fortnight. Some paperwork and details still need to be approved by the AFL before registrations are officially opened.
Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival
20 swimmers attended the Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival on Thursday 14 March. Blackfriars finished in 2nd position behind Clare. Please see a more detailed report in the pages to follow.
Coaches - Urgent
In many schools around Adelaide, including some prominent Independent and Catholic schools, the responsibility of coaching co-curricular teams lies completely with the parent body. Co-curricular for staff in these schools is completely voluntary. This is not the case at Blackfriars!
At Blackfriars, all staff are allocated to a semester of sport or academic activities and they are very committed to ensuring that your children get the opportunity they desire. However; there are only so many of us to fill all positions. All Primary staff have been allocated an activity and many are doing more than their expected share across both the Summer and the Winter. Without the support of parents to fill any remaining roles, some winter teams will not proceed or be nominated for competition.
The school is seeking coaches for the following teams:
- 1 x Year 6/7 Basketball team – Wednesday night games
- The Year 4/5 Football team – Saturday morning matches and weekday training (negotiable)
All coaching roles are paid positions. We urgently require the input of parents or old scholars to ensure these teams are catered for and can be entered into competitions.
For more information please contact me on the details below. Cut off dates for nominations is early next week.
Umpires
If coaching isn’t your thing, then perhaps blowing a whistle and umpiring is! All schools in the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools are required to provide their own umpires and referees.
I am urgently seeking the assistance of families, current students or old scholars to umpire the following sports:
- Year 6/7 Football on Saturday mornings
- Year 4/5 Football on Saturday mornings
- Primary Soccer on Saturday mornings
- Year 3/4/5 Soccer on Friday nights
Payments are made in cash on the day of the fixture. If interested please contact me on the details below.
Sports Day
Keep the date – Friday 5th April
