Soccer Tournament
On Friday 7 September, the best teams from all the school competitions in Victoria gathered for the Melbourne City FC Premiers schools soccer tournament. The game against Sydenham was tense and after going down early by one goal, Sheldon Rozario scored and brought us level. Unfortunately, he was injured by one of their defenders in the process and was taken out for the remainder of the tournament. Then things turned against us. We went into the second half without Sheldon and after we missed a couple of chances to win the game, the Sydenham team scored. Finally we had a chance to equalize once again, but there was a foul by one of our players on the keeper and he was red carded… unfortunately this cost us any chance of getting the score even and we went down by one goal.
The second match was against Mazenod, which from all accounts was one of the best teams in the competition. The final result was a draw and the highlight was how composed and focused our players were, after learning the lessons from the first match. They came out organised and playing well in defence and taking control of the midfield. Majak Mawith had the chance of the game in the dying seconds of the second half, when he was one on one with the keeper after a long ball from one of our defenders and he chose to go for a lob over the head, which was easily reached by the keeper and our chance was gone.
In our last match it was decided we would play everyone who had missed out so far and we went down by two goals, but our fate had really been decided already so it was just great that everyone got to be a participant on the day.
The team learned some valuable lessons on teamwork and strategy and we came away realizing that next year we can start our training earlier and be focused on making it to the finals of this tournament and if we do all the right things we have a chance to come back with the trophy.
Thankyou to all the boys who participated, and to the coaching staff from Football co, Oliver Permal and Meron Nagasi, who where great role models for the kids and made a great contribution to the coaching in the weeks leading up to the tournament and on the day.
