College News

Congratulations Laura and Bianca

It's been a busy year in women's AFL this year where one in three players are now female. Women's AFL is now looking to recruit the next generation and Scouts have been out at local clubs looking for new Talent.

St Johns has two representatives from the south east Junior Football League (SEJ) now participating in the next level of womens AFL football, Laura Gardner from Berwick Football Club and Bianca Mirigliani from Beaconsfield Football Club. The girls have been selected to attend the Melbourne Football Club Academy as part of a three stage, 19 week accelerated learning program. This great opportunity is to help improve skills as well as given an opportunity to play for the Dandenong Stingrays.

In the program  there are 25 players from SEJ and 25 players from the Mornington league. We will also be participating as the curtain raiser in the first Melbourne AFLW game next season.

Congraulations to both Laura and Bianca on their acheivement!

Eco Comp 2018

Running after school over five weeks this term, a number of Year 10 students participated in the annual ECO Comp Economics competition. This is a voluntary competition open to Year 10 students who have demonstrated an interest in the power of a question, look at the world with inquisitive eyes and like to understand why the world works like it does.

The competition consisted of a number of after-school interactive sessions where students learnt about the fundamental concepts of Economics – namely demand, supply, the interaction of buyers and sellers and how this determines the levels of prices in an economy. Much fun was had, even more was learnt and many snacks were consumed; all in the name of learning. This concluded with a multiple choice quiz in the final week for the students to demonstrate what they had learnt.

I am pleased to announce this year’s winner was Aaron Boak, with Cait Jones and Audric Lim as runners up. All three received a voucher of their choosing as reward for demonstrating hard work and commitment to their learning.

All participants in ECO Comp 2018 should be congratulated for their effort, participation and collaboration demonstrated over the five weeks of this competition.

Texts and Traditions Student Night

On the 10 September the Year 12 Texts and Traditions class went on their Student Night to Cardinal Knox Centre in East Melbourne. We listened to the President of the Victorian Association of Teachers of Texts and Traditions about the different special themes for this year as well as to one of the Chief Assessors, learning key skills and techniques for how to approach the Texts and Traditions exam.

History Excursion

The Year 11 20th century history excursion was an overall enjoyable experience.  The Guerrilla Girls and Screenworld exhibitions were both interesting and educational to observe, we were then given the opportunity to look around at the other exhibitions at the NGV. The day was topped off with wonderful weather in the greatest city in the world.

SIS Intermediate Debating

On the 13 September the St John’s Intermediate SIS Debating team competed in the semi-finals against St James at St Johns on the topic of “That the media should not report on the private lives of politicians.” Donglei Tu, Vanshita Udasi, Maria Hinen (debaters) Elissa Truong (speechwriter) and Victoria Mach (timekeeper) did a wonderful job and won their debate so they will be going to the Debating Finals next term.

Debating was a great experience, we faced many challenges and obstacles but we overcame them and we are very proud of our achievements. We give all credits to our teachers who supported us and helped us through this journey.
