Fitness???  Piecing together the puzzle!

Fitness with the 10s & 11s

Our Central Idea - Our heart, lungs and muscles become stronger when we exercise regularly.

  • An inquiry into: which muscles are most at work when we exercise, how our bodies change when we exercise, our choices for exercise.
  • Key concept: change
  • Question: how would you rate your current level of physical fitness?  The children recorded this as one of the following and their reasoning:  Not so Good, Okay, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Any other comment.

We then engaged in some physical activities with a view to reflect and reassess the rating identified at the beginning of the session.

In groups, the children had to run the length of the bowling green to collect pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, one and then two pieces at a time in order to complete the puzzle.

Over the course of the learning, the children will continue to assess and reassess their own level of fitness (more scientifically), ultimately designing a fitness program that reflects their understanding of the central idea.

This Fitness Unit will build on some of the skills we developed last year but we also have more time to inquire into what being fit and healthy means.
