Ben Carroll

Graduate 2016

Music Captain 2016

Hi Brunswick Secondary College Community!

My name is Ben Carroll; I attended Brunswick Secondary College from 2011-2016.

Graduating in 2016,  I was fresh-faced and ready to take on the world - as you can tell by my school photo!

After studying Music Performance Units 3 & 4 in Year 11, I needed to find a way to quench my musical thirst. I successfully applied for  the position of 2016 Music Captain, and it was in this final year at BSC  that I  found my love for working in audio production.  Of course,  this was through attempting to mix the audio for the Rock Bands Night!   Looking back, I made so many rookie mistakes -  but I  so enjoyed these opportunities I chose to volunteer to run the audio desk at as many school events as possible!

Having 'accidentally' found my vocation,   three days after my final  VCE exam in November 2016 I successfully interviewed to enrol at JMC Academy Creative Industries . This enrolment was dependent on achieving an ATAR of 65 and a minimum study score of 30 in English. I easily achieved this, so once my results were in I was on my way!

I chose to study Audio Engineering and Sound Production.  This course is a hands-on production-based course that is directly in sync with the audio industry. It explores the fundamentals of sound and music production, the operation of both studio and live sound equipment, and event audio production.  It was exactly what I was after.

Roll on to 2019 and I am finished my course - graduating again! Early into my tertiary studies,  I chose to undertake some of my course study to a part-time basis.  This has allowed me to meet work commitments and to enjoy  travel opportunities  that were too good to miss,  so I balanced my study commitments alongside them.

I am also the proud owner of my own business, Benjamix AVMy business takes on for sound mixing jobs of all sizes and creative aspirations, from podcasts, orchestral recordings, to heavy metal gigs - and everything in between!

Staff at BSC are wholly responsibile for igniting my passion for Audio Engineering and I thank them for always giving me the opportunity to pursue this interest.

To BSC students, I say that you should never judge a book by its cover and always be open to new opportunities. Have a ‘Yesman!’ attitude wherever possible - because you never know what may lead you to the career you are meant to pursue.
