HSIE/LOTE and Middle School News

Welcome to another year of learning at Henry Kendall High School. Our the HSIE/LOTE Faculty consists of Mr David Ardley, Mrs Jade Draper (Year 10 History), Mrs Julia Kostalas, Mr Mark Macdonald, Miss Cassandra McLennan, Mrs Chloe Mitchell, Mr Judd Newton, Mr Alexander Rozario (Young Achievers History/Geography and Modern History) and Mrs Raegan Travica (LOTE and Year 11 Ancient History).

Our Year 11 Geography group, as well as selected junior Geography students, will be heading to Mount Kosciuszko next week in order to immerse themselves in fieldwork and further develop their understanding of the Biophysical Interactions topic. I would like to thank Mr Newton for the hard work and planning that has occurred to make this amazing learning experience a reality. I would also like to express our appreciation to Mr Alan Herring for his support and expertise. The group will also be supported by Miss McLennan. I am confident that the group will have an amazing few days and will have lots of tales to tell. Wishing you good weather and happy trails!

Out HSIE and LOTE Team have been impressed by the settled and positive manner that all year groups have started the 2019 school year. Our Year 12 students have returned with assessment in a range of HSIE subject areas. Students will also need to ensure that they have completed vital tasks that were set over the holiday period.

Our Year 10 History students have received permission notes for an excursion to THE Sydney Jewish Museum on 13 March. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear survivor stories, gain insight from the education team and explore the museum. Our Year 10 History teachers have been impressed with the maturity and sensitivity displayed in classrooms. We are confident that this learning experience will further develop insight and empathy for those who survived, as well as the victims of this dark moment in world history.

We have wonderful opportunities planned for other year groups in 2019. Our fieldwork days are being planned and we hope that all students will embrace these learning opportunities this year.

Our Middle School Team consists of Mr Luke Banks (replacing Ms Jennifer Tebb in 2019), Mrs Tarley Jones, Miss Stephanie Searle, Miss Tamara Sexty and Mr Kent Silver. Mrs Jones will be with us Monday and Tuesday, while Miss Sexty will be with us Wednesday to Friday.

Year 7 Middle School students have made the transition to high school in a very positive way and will soon begin assessment across all strands – Global Awareness, Human Relationships, Investigation and Communication and Project Based Learning.

All Year 7 students have received their 2019 Camp notes this week. Our camp is planned for  8 - 10 April at the Great Aussie Bush Camp, Kincumber. Students will need to return all completed permission notes (including medical and dietary requirements) by 27 February. Payments will be required by March. For further information please contact Mr Mark Macdonald (Head Teacher – HSIE, LOTE and Middle School) or Miss Crystal Reynen (Year 7 Adviser).

The Year 7 Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 12 March 2019 from 6:30 pm in the Henry Kendall High School Library. Attendees will be able to hear about the programs we provide in Middle School and YAP, as well the amazing opportunities and support available at our school. A supper will held at the conclusion of the information sessions to welcome you to the Henry Kendall High School community. Students will receive information about the evening in the coming days.
