Football

As you might know by now, it was a most successful night on Friday 23rd August as the Under 16 College Magpies team won their Grand Final against Coleraine at Melville Oval by 55 points. This meant that they remained undefeated for the season and it was the club’s 3rd Under 16 premiership in a row. Many of the Year 10 boys have played in all three of these and it will be a special memory to last forever. Congratulations to coach Pat Sherlock who has done a magnificent job in developing these boys over 3 years now and to win 3 premierships in a row is such a remarkable effort!

The presentation night was held for the club at Alexandra House on Thursday night. Over 100 people attended and an enjoyable and relaxing night was held by all with many awards given out and thank yous given to wrap up what was another most successful and rewarding season of junior football in the Hamilton Kangaroos Junior Football Association. Acknowledgement for all her hard work this season as club representative to the association went to Di Austin on a job well done. Thanks to everyone who attended and has helped in any way during the season. It has been most appreciated.

Major award winners on the night were:

U 13 Best and Fairest – Oscar Hausler

U 13 Runner up best and fairest – Jake Tonissen

U 16 Best and fairest – Fergus Roberts

U 16 Runner up best and fairest – Charley Falla Jones

In other club news, I can officially announce some sad news in that the Hamilton Kangaroos Junior Football Association will cease to exist in 2020 and beyond following an AFL review into junior football in the south west region. This means that College Magpies Football Club will no longer be operating and it is the end of junior football in Hamilton as we know it.

The positive to this though is that it creates some exciting new opportunities for young footballers in the region as the Hamilton Kangaroos will now be forming a junior sub-committee to administer the operations of the teams that will be entered by the club in the Under 14 and 16 Hampden Football Netball League and in the newly formed Greater South West Junior Football League Under 14 and Under 16.5 age groups. Further information, by way of frequently asked questions and answers, will be released in the coming weeks regarding the number of teams they will be fielding in 2020 and the selection process for these, along with other information as it becomes available.

If you would like further information about all of this, please email me at lalexander@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au .

Under 16 and Men's Hockey

The finals began with some strong performances by many of our teams.  Following the lead of the B Grade women’s teams who performed well on Friday night, the Under 16 teams gave us two wins and one gallant loss on Saturday morning.

College Blue defeated College Red in a match which was very close throughout the first half.  A late score which established a two goal margin at the break was probably the decisive moment in the game, Blue recording a 5-0 win.  Jack Austin, Charlie Duver, Nat Featherstone, Jake Andersen and Jack Wall found the net, the first and last goals coming from penalty strokes.  Blue played some excellent team-oriented hockey.  Red made several fast breaks and were only ever a goal away from putting real pressure on Blue.

Freddie Martin coached Red for the first half of the season; since his departure James Fear has looked after the players for several games, but the team has struggled for consistency of advice as other commitments have kept him away on a number of Saturdays and Mrs Winter Cooke and I have filled in on those other occasions.  Eren Zehir deserves great credit for marshalling the team and planning training activities – and the team should be proud of their efforts throughout the season.  Kellan Sander too has taken on a leadership role, looking after the team’s supply of balls and the masks for penalty corners.  Saturday’s game does not define a very impressive effort all year by this team and the excellent leadership shown from within.

In the second game, College Gold booked a place in the Grand Final with a 4-2 victory over Coleraine Black.  Isaac Hocking (2), Euan Sutherland and Owen Priestley were the goal-scorers and the team played committed and strong hockey with all players doing their bit.  They deserve to be in the big game, having played some skilled hockey throughout the year and seeming to be in control of their semi final for much of the match.

Gold will play the winner of this week’s Preliminary Final between Coleraine Black and College Blue.  Blue hopes to make it an all-College Final but they will need to bring their best game on Saturday if they wish this to occur.

The Open team recorded a hard-fought 4-3 win over Bulls in their semi-final and qualified for the Grand Final by doing so.  We controlled much of the first half and probably should have been more than 2-1 ahead at the break.  Jock Adamson, who had played a sensational half, and Dougal Sweeney were our scorers by half-time.  We started the second half sluggishly and found ourselves 2-3 down with around twelve minutes to play.  Captain Reagan Simons slotted a penalty corner home and then Eren Zehir was exactly where he should have been – near the spot – when a centring ball came his way.  His shot never looked like missing.  A few frantic moments later the game was over.

Two teams to their Grand Final and another one still alive – it was a good weekend!

Hockey Dinner

All players should have received information last week – assuming the distribution system via coaches, captains, friends, siblings and others (!) worked.  In case anyone involved in hockey has not received information about the Hockey Dinner on Saturday 14 September, a copy of the information and the booking sheet was attached to last week’s Newsletter mail-out.

If paying directly, please also send a copy of the booking sheet to me so we can ensure everyone is fully accounted for.

The Dinner is always a good night and there will be some revisions to our order of proceedings this year - watch out for some new initiatives!

Please note that this Friday (6 September) is our deadline to the caterers.  It will not be possible to change numbers after this time so make sure you have booked your place by the end of this week.  Please also note that we will be charged for the number of serves we have nominated as required – late withdrawals are unlikely to be able to receive a refund.

Netball

On Monday the 19th of August, three College teams went to Wendouree to compete at the Netball Victoria Schools Championships. Two were entered in the Junior Secondary Division and one in the Intermediate Division (Yr 9 and 10).

Team reports:

College Gold consisted of Olivia Handbury, Hayley Spence, Victoria Dunstan, Grace Macpherson, Meg Ogle, Cheyenne Kollar, Margo Hocking, Lily Schroeder, Diamon Dickeson and myself. Our first game was against Ballarat Clarendon. For the first half of the game we had a strong lead but, in the end,  Clarendon won by two goals. After all 5 of our games, we came home with 2 wins, 1 being against Mount Clear College, and fortunately for us, the other win was against College Blue, in a very tight and loudly ‘cheered for’ game.

All of the girls were consistent throughout the whole day and everyone enjoyed the competition. I think all of the girls were waiting for the grudge match of the day, College Gold Vs. College Blue. Fortunately for us we won, but both teams played really well and there was lots of laughter on the court. Overall, everyone had a great time at the competition.

College Navy consisted of Neve McClure, Charlotte Millear, Olivia Mann, Laura Michelmore, Macey Sanders, Sarah Richardson, Chloe Frost, Emma Vallance, Maddi Calvert and Elsie Adams.

Unfortunately, a few days before the competition Macey injured herself and was unable to play, leaving us short of defenders and lacking a bit of height. It was great to see everyone willing to learn and putting their hand up to play positions that aren’t their favourite and giving it their best shot. The standard of netball was very high; we were only able to win one game, which was against Mt Clear. Our last round was against the other College team, which was a closely contested game, but unfortunately, we lost by 2 goals in the end. Thank you to Mrs Rowe for giving up her time to coach us and for making the effort to come to our trainings. Also thank you to the parents who came down to support us and for scoring our games, it was very much appreciated.

Charlotte Millear

Intermediate team:

Two draws!  The intermediate team were up against some amazing teams – and matched them all the way!  This team was kept very busy with games all day.  The girls were thrown into a lot of different positions and played strongly throughout each game.  The strength of the opposition spurred our girls on to have some excellent passages of play and to defend very tightly.

Our players for the day: Jedah Huf, Bridget Delany, Poppy Austin, Ellie Lehmann, Millie Dopheide, Indi Talay, Maddie Green, Sophie Cunningham, Arielle Dickeson and Ally Gray.

Thank you to Jody Roth, who again coached and trained the girls.  Her expertise is highly valued and we are lucky that she is

willing to lend her time to our netballing program.

Thanks very much to the parents who came down to Ballarat and who helped out in various ways; your support is always very much appreciated.

Shooting

The 2019 Clay Target Shooting season has started well with our first competition at the Coleraine Field and Game Club, where the team was competing in the Glenelg Division Interschool Shooting Competition. With favorable weather conditions, everyone was able to shoot well and gain some success. Overall, the College placed 2nd in the team event, after narrowly being beaten by Monivae College. This result was added to with individual success from Jacob Mibus who came 2nd in the Senior Boys’ aggregate and Tasha Spratling who came 3rd in the Senior Girls’ aggregate.

On the 22nd of August, we had our second event of the year at Noorat for the South West Zone School Down the Line Championships. Through windy and cold conditions, the team shot exceptionally well with individual achievements from Ayleish Beaty who came 2nd in the Senior Girls’ aggregate, after a shoot off against Rosie Dopheide, who finished 4th overall; a great achievement for Rosie in her first Down the Line competition. Fraser Diprose added to these already impressive results by claiming 1st in the Senior Boys’ aggregate; this achievement is to be commended when considering the high level of competition and the weather conditions that were against him.

The team is continuing to train on Monday nights in preparation for the biggest shoot of the year held at Minyip in Term 4 and best of luck to all of those who are going to attend and especially to the Year 12s in their last shoot with the school. The Clay Target Season will finish with the Year 7 to 9 students attending the Warrnambool Middle Years Competition on the 28th October.

College Cricket

College Cricket is almost here yet again. Unfortunately we will not be fielding a team in the Under 16 competition this season. Instead, we will have 3 x U/12 Boys teams, 2 x U/14 teams along with girls U/13 and U/17 teams. Some information for the College community if you wish to be involved this season.

COLLEGE CC UNIFORM

Similarly, the TNF orders are set to close on the 8th of September – this will be the only order completed this season. The College Cricket will do not hold stock on hand to sell to the parents, all players are required to order their own playing shirt and cap (shorts are optional) before the due date if they wish to purchase a College CC uniform. When ordering through TNF it is important to select ‘Apparel Club Collection’ when completing your order. https://www.tnfcricket.com/college
