Around the Grounds
St Augustine's has had a busy three weeks in sport, competing in various competitions and fixtures. Saints entered two junior teams and one senior team in the FQ Futsal competition held at Redlynch Central Stadium in Week 2. All three teams had undefeated performances during the round games. The senior team maintained their unbeaten run defeating Cairns High in the final to take out the competition, while both junior teams showed great skills to make the finals. One team lost in the semi-final with the other coming second after losing the grand final despite being undefeated all day. A special thanks goes to Mr McDonough and Mr James for coaching the teams.
The FNQ Intermediate Volleyball Cup proved to be another tight competition. With two teams competing in the 19-team competition, our A team displayed outstanding skills, reaching the final match. Although they were defeated by Mossman High in a hard-fought battle, their second-place finish is a testament to their skills and development in volleyball at Saints. Thanks to Mr Moote for coaching the teams, as well as Aiden Prestipino and Abu-John Mye for their assistance on the day.
Recently, our U16 and First XIII Rugby League teams faced Trinity Bay in the Cowboys Challenge and Aaron Payne Cup trials. Despite a loss for the U16 team, they showed promising signs that they can build upon in the weeks ahead leading into the season. On the other hand, the First XIII side dominated the game, showcasing the results of their training and hard work. Both teams are building towards their round 1 fixture against Mareeba State High School in Week 7. Thank you Mr O’Farrell, Mr Tomarchio, Mr Anderson and Mr Will, for devoting countless hours to preparing the teams thus far this season.
Congratulations to all the athletes who represented the College in these competitions. Keep up the great work.
CISSA Sport
The Saints CISSA teams dominated in the recent rounds of the CISSA competition, securing victories across all 10 fixtures in the last two rounds. In Week 3, we emerged victorious in AFL (93-16), basketball (69-54), football (4-0), touch football (14-4), and volleyball (2-0) continuing our dominance of the 2023 competition.
In Week 5, all five teams continued their winning streak, defeating Redlynch College in AFL (44-21), basketball (47-45), football (2-1), touch football (7-2), and volleyball (2-1). Notably, the AFL, football, touch football, and volleyball teams have all secured top spots on the ladder, showcasing their dominance in the competition. Additionally, the basketball team has qualified for the finals and is vying for the third position ahead of the washout rounds.
Congratulations to the CISSA teams for their impressive achievements so far. Their remarkable performances and consistent victories have positioned them as strong contenders in the CISSA competition. The teams will look to compete in catch-up rounds and training over the next fortnight before the finals commencing in Week 8.

Bull Masters Coaching Session
The Bulls Masters visited St Augustine’s on the Wednesday of Week 5 to deliver a coaching session with the intermediate and First XI cricket squads. The boys participated in a net session and Q&A with former state and international cricketers Darren Lehmann, Andy Bichel and Adam Dale. The Bulls Masters representatives were very impressed with the standard of cricketers at Saints and gave the boys some great pointers ahead of their upcoming season.
TCC and Peninsula Cross-Country
Congratulations to the students who participated in the TCC and Peninsula Cross-Country trials earlier this term. St Augustine’s had a strong representation with almost 30 students qualifying for the Peninsula Cross-Country trials with those below placing on the podium for their age groups. We are awaiting confirmation of our Peninsula representatives from the recent trials in Yungaburra. Well done to all students who got involved.

Bill Turner Football Squad
The Bill Turner Cup is a national schools football competition that St Augustine’s College has a strong affiliation with. The competition is in its 44th year. On Wednesday 10 May, the College’s under-15 Bill Turner football squad played their first game against Trinity Bay State High School at Edge Hill Football Grounds. The team, led by Co-captains Dominic Johnson and Jack Edwards, started strongly with two quick goals to Harry Nielsen and Jack Edwards in the opening exchanges. St Augustine’s had plenty of scoring opportunities throughout both halves, however, a strong performance by the Trinity Bay goalkeeper kept our strikers at bay. Our goalkeeper, Patrick Maher, and our backline provided solid distribution to the midfield and forwards. St Augustine’s maintained possession throughout the game and won 5-0. The next game is against Newman Catholic College on Wednesday 31 May at 4pm at Edge Hill Football Grounds.
